Empire reforming Jagged Alliance on DS

European publisher signs on for Strategy First and Cypron Studios' turn-based tactical RPG; Atari to distribute in North America.

While the Nintendo DS has seen its share of turn-based strategy games like Civilization Revolution and Age of Empires: The Age of Kings, one of the earliest tactical franchises announced for the system--Strategy First's Jagged Alliance--has yet to materialize. That could soon change, as Empire Interactive today announced that it had picked up the publishing rights for the game.

While Empire didn't give a release window for the project, it did say it was being developed by Strategy First and Cypron Studios, makers of the DS real-time strategy title Command and Destroy and the PC role-playing game Gods: Lands of Infinity. According to Empire, the game will re-create "the nonlinear gameplay that made the 1994 original so popular amongst gamers." As part of a recently announced deal, Atari will handle the North American distribution for the DS edition of Jagged Alliance.

Jagged Alliance for the DS isn't the only new use of the vintage PC gaming property. Strategy First is also working on Jagged Alliance 3, and has partnered with Union Entertainment in an attempt to make a feature film based on the franchise.
