Sumo Digital serving up Sega Superstars Tennis

Sonic and other mascots set to hit the courts early next year in Europe and North America.

Sonic the Hedgehog is in a competitive mood of late. Taking a break from his normal evil-thwarting activities, he's penned in to showcase his company crossover dominance in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games next month and Super Smash Bros. Brawl in February, respectively.

Sonic's also going to take care of some business in his own backyard, as Sega today announced Sega Superstars Tennis, a mascot sports game from the latest Foundation 9 acquisition, Sumo Digital. The game is currently set for release on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Wii, and Nintendo DS in Europe and North America in early 2008. The Xbox 360 and PS3 will feature online play.

Sonic may be the publisher's ace, but it will draw a pool of more than 15 playable characters from its lengthy history, including Super Monkeyball's AiAi, Space Channel 5's Ulala, and Samba De Amigo's Amigo. Each character will have its own abilities, as well as home courts, like Sonic's Green Hill Zone.

Sumo Digital is no stranger to the subject matter, having previously developed Virtua Tennis 3 for the Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation Portable and Virtua Tennis World Tour for the PSP. The studio has also worked with Sega before on recent versions of the Outrun series for Xbox, PS2, PSP, and PC.

I really hope they can pull this off, it would be really cool to see Sega characters playable all in one game, and hey if Nintendo can pull it off with Mario why not Sega with Sonic?

If it is really an improvement over Wii Tennis it will be worth it. but since it's from the same who developed Virtua Tennis i expect high standars.

    Online rating-ranked-championships please!!

Wow...It looks nice, and with all of the Sega classics as playable Characters/arenas. I hope there is a Skys of Acadia level in the game

Here are some characters that have been confirmed:

    Sonic The Hedgehog
    Amy Rose
    Dr. Robotnik
    Ulala (Space Channel 5)
    Aiai (Super Monkey Ball)
    Samba (Samba De Amigo)

Here are my three hoping for characters:

Beat (Jet Grind Radio) - There was a level photo in the recent Nintendo Power that featured, hopefully, a level from Jet Grind Radio, so here's hoping.
    Nights (Journey of Dreams)
    Vyse Dyne (Skies of Arcadia)

I'd rather go outside and jump rope wearing nothing but pink short-shorts and get gang raped by a group of elephants and have it all get posted on YouTube than play something by the name of "Sega Superstars Tennis"; WTF is that? I mean, what characters are there? Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, basically a showdown of Sega furries yiffing it on the tennis court. What else could there be? The Datona USA rides battle it out against the Virtua Racing polygon cars? The Virtua On mechs go at it with tennis balls instead of rockets and lasers? The Virtua Fighters pick up a tennis racket? Or heck, unlock the Panzer Dragoon character to go against the unlockable Galaxy Force cruiser? And if we're lucky, the Alien 3 Gun gunner vs the Virtua Cop cop or even House of the Dead guy, or maybe, just maybe that game I can't recall where you gun from a helicopter; can they even use those character? Oh, and that Nights pixie? Why don't they just wait for the next Mario Tennis to make itself to the Wii, and they can just add Sonic and gang to the mix like they're doing with SSBB.

I've never played a Virtua Tennis title and hear great things about the series. . .This could be a great game for me, at least.

This will just be a kiddie version of virtua tennis 3 with sonic instead of real life pro players. Sega sure knows how to recycle their code.

once AGAIN we see how nintendo sets a standard and others try to follow suit. Just HOW many party games have we seen since Mario Party came out? the problem is nintendo can, as in the past, let this get to their head and start thinking their every move is gold. lets hope they dont do it again
