Czech Republic wins EA's World Cup

Publisher simulates tournament with 2006 FIFA World Cup game, pegs Czechs to take home victory after besting Brazil 2-1 in finals.

The 2006 World Cup doesn't kick off until Friday, when host country Germany takes on Costa Rica, but Electronic Arts is already picking a winner for the finals.

Using the simulation engine in its multiplatform 2006 FIFA World Cup game, EA re-created the entire tournament, from the opening salvo of four-team round-robin groups to the July 9 World Cup final in Berlin. And according to EA's game, the winner will be the Czech Republic, rising to the occasion with a 2-1 victory over soccer powerhouse Brazil in the finals.

Not everything with the simulation went as one might expect. EA's tournament saw just one penalty shootout in the 64 simulated matches, Costa Rica making its best World Cup showing ever by reaching the quarter finals, and Italy and Portugal failing to make it out of the first round. The US team made it out of the opening round of group play, but no farther, as Brazil knocked them out of the tournament with a 3-2 victory.

For more FIFA World Cup action, come back with GameSpot Wednesday for a "friendly match," as GameSpot USA takes on GameSpot UK on the Xbox 360 version of the game. San Francisco-based editors Brian Ekberg and Justin Calvert will represent the stars and stripes as they take on an English team helmed by GameSpot UK hooligans Guy Cocker and Phil Elliott.

Rich Gallup and Jeff Gerstmann will call the action, so tune in on Wednesday, June 7 at noon PDT (8 p.m. in London) to see it all go down live. For more on 2006 FIFA World Cup, check out GameSpot's full review.

No way will the Czechs win this year's World Cup. After all, this is their first showing in like...forever, and don't you ever forget that. I'm giving it to England, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, The Netherlands, Spain or Portugal before I give it to them, and yet the simulation did not make Portugal even past the first round. That totally sucks. Anyway, that shows you how credible EA Sports' simulation actually is (can someone say utter garbage?). Anyway, I would rather choose my team (Mexico!) and carry them all the way to the cup, as I have little faith in the game simulating any matches for me, because it has done some weird things for me in the past...Brazil losing 4-0 to Australia. Please tell me when that will ever happen.

Pffft! EA software as buggy and broken as always.

It's going to be Brazil or maybe just maybe the USA.

It doesn't seem like non-reality to me, considering Czech Republic is ranked #2 in the WORLD.

I hope they repeated the results for variables.
If this rnds up being accurate, then this will usher in a new age of sports gambling using videogames.

If the teams in the game are based on the FiFa world rankings then yes this would happen, seeing as Brazil is number one and Czech is number two and Czech could easily upset Brazil. however the Fifa world rankings are bascially useless and anyone in the top ten could upset anyone depending on how they play on any particular day. Czechs will not win, im thinking italy has got this one.
