My Weight Loss Coach First Look

Like Brain Age for your beer gut; we check out this fitness-minded game for DS.

Feel like you could stand to lose a couple of pounds? Yeah, same here. Luckily, there's a genre of games out there that aim to do for people what self-help cassettes did for our parents. You've got mind-expanding games such as Brain Age and its ilk, as well as Nintendo DS games that will help you with your foreign-language skills, and a new wave of games that look to do for your body what the aforementioned games do for your mind. The most obvious example is the upcoming Wii Fit, but Ubisoft has its own entry for the body-conscious gamer: My Weight Loss Coach for the Nintendo DS. We had a chance to see the game at the most recent Nintendo Media Summit in San Francisco.

My Weight Loss Coach is essentially a way to record your physical activity and give you the daily nudge in the direction of fitness thanks to the coaching sessions that make up the majority of the game's presentation. There are 10 coaching sessions on hand that display basic information on health and fitness, and they will also present you with numerous ways to keep track of and improve your health in the form of challenges. These challenges will range from the very simple (stand up and sit down 10 times in a row) to more challenging (such as walking a certain number of steps in a day).

Although you won't be doing push-ups or yoga on top of your Nintendo DS, a la Wii Fit, you will still be able to keep a fairly accurate record of one aspect of your physical activity; the game will come packed in with a pedometer that you can clip on your belt or waist during the day. Afterward, you can connect the pedometer to the GBA slot on your DS and it will record the number of steps you walked that day. This will be integrated with the session routines you do during the game--one session challenge might ask you to walk more steps than you did the previous day--and the game will keep track of your progress as you go.

With a bare-bones presentation (your coach is really just a stick figure), My Weight Loss Coach players will be counting on the game's content to be more appealing than its visuals. It's tough to call My Weight Loss Coach a game--it's really more of an interactive journal--but it does seem to be turning out as a nice tool for those looking for some accountability with getting into shape and staying that way. The game is due for release later this year.

Well you could say anything about go do it yourself, you dont need this to do it, etc etc etc, but face it, its more fun and entretaining when you have something yea "something" not someone to do your stuff. In the end it will be you and only you if you accept the challanges or not. Is just like regular games they start easy like stand up and sit down 3 times a day to walk 10,000 steps WTF!!! lol is like shoot 3 gangster, steal 1 car and then survive an atack of 9999999999 gangsters, aliens, monster trucks, crazzy cogs, dogs cats for 2 hours LOL. It wil eventually get harder as you go, this is good for people that likes games, likes challenges and cant mantain good healty habits. Its a weird market is not for evryone but i think im in that market so ima try it....

it could be good, but seems to need some aspect of accountability for missing exercises, making a poor meal decision, or setting the game aside for a while to go play W.O.W.

I mean, I COULD do what the game/tool says or I could just do what I want and disregard whatever the coach says.

As a new mom I get very excited about gadgets like these. It is very hard when you are not working to be able to afford an expensive gym membership and I think these are very in expensive, helpful ways to get my pre pregnancy body back. Instead of going out and spending $1000 a year on a gym membership, plus additional money for personal trainers/nutritionists and, for my situation, babysitters, I can pay 150-200 for this and Wii fit and get the exact same, if not better, results. I love that they both offer challenges and that any information you need on your way to reaching your goals are right at your finger tips. I will deffinitely be picking this up.

    You're **** joking right?
I didn't buy a gaming console to improve my eyesight, do simple quick math equations, or lose weight (I'm with silverwind though, I need to gain weight).
I bought it to **** play GAMES.
If I want to lose weight, or somefat ass wants to, how about going to the damn gym? Eating right. You don't need your ds asking you if you ate an apple, just **** do it. Are you retarded? Eat a goddamn apple, don't eat that doughnut.

The DS has gone downhill since the release of brainage. Developers see jackasses bought it, so they make the same **** This crap is expanding to the Wii too...I lovED nintendo...I have never felt a want to purchase a 360 or PS3, I don't like a lot of their games...
But this is bull****. SSBB is crap compared to Melee...and that's the only game on WII that's worth actually buying (no more heros can be completed on all three modes within a rental period).

Everything is casual now, and this is just more fuel to the burning pile of bull**** thrown on the DS and Wii.

Decent idea. May fit well as a combo with WiiFit, but, without interactivity between the apps, I can't see this as being a huge benefit. It's the same idea of keeping a journal (or record for you manly types) of your progress. The same thing can be done with pencil and paper, but this offers a more convenient way to keep up with everything. That being said, this isn't a game. It's a tool. Don't confuse the two.

That pedometer seems pretty cool but aside from that, I see absolutely no appeal in this game. People who think they will lose weight playing a video game will no doubt opt for Wii Fit instead.

The problem for me seems that aside from the pedometer, there is no way to make a real game out of this. The DS cant measure how much you eat, or if you actually do the sitting down/standing up thing. At least with brain age the excersises were tied into the ds itself

An Innovative step in the right direction. Believe it or not, some gamers who aren't either fat and lazy, or headed in that direction, appreciate some cool gadgets which will help them maintain a healthy balance of first person shooters, porn, and exercise/diet. And to be honest, I am proud of Nintendo's ambitious approach to variety in gaming, it adds to the selection and is admittedly a good business strategy all together. A win win partnership between gamers and developers.

Still awaiting the dumbbell expansion set that hooks to your DS, and ultimately causes many users to complain of fractured DS's.

    Could you imagine? =)

Do you really need something like this to lose weight? No, go to the gym and eat healthily is all you need to know.

I can see this being helpful to people who are trying to live a healthier lifestyle (Being conscious of what you're eating and how much physical activity you do really encourages good practices). They can't say gamers are totally lazy...^___^
