The World Ends With You English Preview

We try out the localized version of Square Enix's quirky, urban-themed Nintendo DS game.

Now that The World Ends With You has emerged in Japan, Square Enix gave us some time with a near-final English build of the upcoming portable role-playing game. The game was developed by Jupiter and is currently being localized for release in the US this April. Previous coverage has already touched on the frenetic combat, the zany characters, and the updated name (formerly known as It's a Wonderful World). In our latest hands-on time, we got to tackle not only most of the single-player experience, but also the versatile fashion system.

In the Tokyo district of Shibuya, brands reign supreme. Fashionistas and the demon-like "noise" roam the streets of this high-concept take on action role-playing. Each street is a battleground, and what you wear into battle not only decides what powers you wield, but also results in what fashions are popular among the aforementioned brand-a-holics. You can purchase posh threads from the sensibly styled Natural Puppy store or drop hard-earned Yen on the most hardcore of Tiger Punks attire. Brands are tied both to clothes and to the pin-based talent system.

Pins are a wild fad taking Shibuya by storm. Not only do you wear them, but you also battle with them in contests and very lethal confrontations with the game's enemies. You collect pins of different designs, and each has a different set of attributes. Like clothing, what you wear into battle with the noise determines how well you will fare. The pin powers vary from energy shooting, to melee attacks, to simply dropping a load of rocks on your ethereal assailants. Essentially, if there is a power available, then you can find a pin to manifest it in battle.

Like any great Square Enix game, the weapons become a minigame of their own. The game's pin system lets you slide your pin across a table, using the DS stylus, to knock your opponent's pin off of the edge. When one player's worn collection has been knocked to the ground, the survivor is the winner. The pin implementation is very reminiscent of the pog sensation from the early '90s. Pins can be bought from stores, acquired from defeated foes, and won by completing in-game quests. Pogs were sometimes the spoils of lunchtime fights, but they couldn't grow spines, swing hammers, or levitate themselves away from precipitous drops like these pins can. What the two fads have in common is the ability to drop down on other similarly styled objects to land a devastating blow in the match.

Although pin matches play a subordinate part to the main gameplay, the pin-based matches can be carried to Wi-Fi bouts against friends who have also unlocked the pun-tacularly named Inpincible Tin Pin Slammer. You can host or join a match with up to three other players to knock their collected pins off of the virtual table. It's a nice touch that really looks set to add a fun dynamic to what seems to be a solid single-player experience. We'll have more on The World Ends With You as the April release date draws near.

Can't wait for this game! I pre-ordered from game for mine. It's not aimed at girls at all with the whole fashion thing, i am not one to care about fashion, i just where what i like and i am a girl. Also i have seen alot of boys who care about fashion alot more then a few of the girls i know. Anyway the english trailer is on the official web if anyone wanted to know, i'm not sure if it's on youtube or anything.

    it looks good. ^^
I'm definitely going to pick it up & i'm glad SquareEnix is up for making unique games and not just sticking to their most well known series FF.
As for it being aimed at 'girls', i beg to differ. Its clearly aimed at both. If it was aimed at JUST girls, then the leading character would be a girl (think Harvest Moon cute and Cooking Mama)
I don't know why everyone was disappointed with FF3, i mean i agree the story was very bare, but its an old game. The main selling point, apart from it being an FF installment, was the job system, which i enjoyed.

This game does look interesting. I like the art style, and the combat seems like it could be a lot of fun, as long as it didn't get too crazy. I'll wait for reviews till I decide whether or not to buy it. I have to agree with paul_hubans, most people may buy this just because Square Enix is putting it out (I myself and tempted to like it a bit more than I normally would), though this is understandable because the company usually makes good games. I also thought FF III was pretty disappointing...It didn't really seem to have much life in it.

Does this game scream Jet Set Radio like crazy? or is it me? I miss that game so much, I wonder if Sega has a slight interest in doing another jawsome Jet set Radio. I am waiting on the review for this one... I barely play the DS... considering I barely ever travel, and like to look at things and read books when I do travel.

Can't wait for this to come out, and I wonder if there will be any secret unlockables from the FF series in here to like FFT and others to numerous to mention, even if not still will get this game.

This is just one of those quirky games that probably wouldn't do too well if it weren't for being sold under the Square-Enix brand name... It really doesn't look that compelling to me. I'm guessing it's more tailored more to a female audience, with it's KH style design and fashion-based theme (FFX2's Garment Grid, anyone?), but I'm guessing a lot of people are going to be purchasing it simply because it's a Square-Enix game... So far, Square-Enix's recent titles have been mediocre at best, with FF3 DS being a huge let down. I'm looking forward to the US release of FF4, but I really hope they don't screw it up, because the Square portion of Square-Enix just isn't the same Squaresoft that it used to be...

I bought this game in Tokyo when it just came out and it is a bit confusing (you need to control a character on the top screen with the arrow pad at the same time as using the stylus on the bottom screen if I remember correctly). The graphics are really nice though and the sound is nice. I think I would buy its English release too.
