Sonic dueling Black Knight on Wii

Sega announces new fantasy adventure title that drops its emblematic hedgehog into a medieval setting.

Last year Sonic made his debut on the Nintendo Wii with Sonic and the Secret Rings, which received only middling reviews. The blue hedgehog's second non-Virtual Console appearance on the platform was Sonic & Mario at the Olympic Games, which also garnered only mild praise.

Today, Sega unannounced its spiny mascot is going for a Wii trifecta. This time around, the blue blur is starring in Sonic and the Black Knight, a new adventure from Sonic Team in Japan. As the title implies, the game will have a fantasy theme, with an "Arthurian-inspired" storyline that casts sonic as a squire aspiring to knighthood. The game is the second in the Sonic Storybook series, after Secret Rings.

According to Sega, Sonic and the Black Knight will also employ the Wii's motion-sensing remote and Nunchuk for a "unique" control scheme, but did not elaborate on gameplay. The Wii exclusive is due out in spring 2009, several months after the scheduled release of Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, BioWare's eagerly awaited role-playing game for the DS. Check out GameSpot's E3 2008 preview of the game for more details.

Don't get me wrong. I've been a loyal sonic fan over the years, but wtf genies, swords, rpgs, werewolves, etc. I'd prefer another sonic adventure game or something that fits sonic's highspeed platformer style

    This. Is. Ridiculous.

I just want to run around and jump on stuff.

    A la SONIC ADVENTURE.

I think Team Sonic is being paid per game they can pump out at this point, not by sales percentage.

Team Sonic have COMPLETELY LOST THEIR MINDS. Make Sonic Adventure 3, make it like the first Adventure on he Dreamcast, and you'll have a great game. Enough of this gimmicky bull

you critics suck this game will be of the hood for sure. I like how they keep adding things to sonic. Yeah the speeding part is awsome but sega is trying to make it even better

Sonic in a medieval based game. I like that! And the people who think the sword thing is a Legend of Zelda rip off, then your wrong!!!! There are a lot of other games with swords and people don't call them Legend of Zelda rip offs. So do you call a real life cat holding a sword a Zelda rip off?

hmm this could be good..but with Sonics track record I just don't hold much faith in the speedster.

Hopefully it doesn't become an rpg... In a sonic game you should only have to hit something once or twice to kill it (bosses excepted) and you can be killed as fast. As soon as they introduce a health bar, though... Fail.

Sword sounds more interesting than punching or jumping on things, I'll agree. Amy's hammer from Sonic Adventure 2: Battle VS mode was a nice touch (when she jumped it came out). Expanding the idea, we get some awesome ninja/assassin sonic, right?

Anyway, at least it's not a gun... I died a little inside when I played Shadow the Hedgehog...

Secret rings and sonic the hedgehog also looked promising, btw. Hedgehog wielding sword sounds like fun, though. A fat plumber with mustache sounds still better.

    Seems promising.
I looked at some concept art and Sonic's swrod looks beast.
How this game will turn out no one knows. only time will tell. I think this will be a good step in Sonic games.
and for the haters, shut it. You're not time travelers so stop bashin!

well seeing how SEGA did so well with the whole vehicle thing in sonic 360 and shadow the hedgehog, and how the unique controls of sonic and the secret rings blew our minds, this new melee weapon will surly make the game oodles of fun.

    extreme sarcasm, btw

if the controlling system is gonna be as super mario galaxy's then it'll be good but sonic & the secret rings's was like : Oh, Ah , Oww
    i like it , though
