UK game charts: December 10-16

Electronic Arts looks to enjoy happy holidays as FIFA 07 takes the festive number-one slot.

The year 2006 is set to end on a footballing note for British gamers. EA has at least three reasons to be cheerful during the festive season. In the all-formats sales chart for games in the UK, FIFA 07 was the top-selling game for the week of December 10 to 16, Need for Speed Carbon was at number two, and The Sims 2: Pets held steady in sixth position.

It wasn't all EA for the week, as THQ's WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2007 pushed its way back up to third place following the release of the PlayStation Portable version, relegating Pro Evolution Soccer 6 to fourth. Activision's Call of Duty 3 dropped one place to fifth, but Gears of War--the only single-format game in the top 10--nudged up from eighth to seventh position. The last three spots on the top 10 were taken up by Happy Feet, Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, and Cars, in that order.

Nintendo titles have had mixed fortunes in the run-up to Christmas--Dr Kawashima's Brain Training (released in the US as Brain Age) moved up from 13 to 11 while The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess fell out of the top 10 to number 12, despite the release of the GameCube version. However, Rockstar can celebrate a surge of sales for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, which moved up five places from 18 to 13.

Expect many of the same names to show up in the charts for the week of December 17 to 23, as there are few newcomers looking to shake things up. The standout titles heading to shops on Friday are Wii versions of the previously released games Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance.

'Sony rules? There is an equal amount of Xbox 360 games in the top 10.

Not to mention that there are TONS more people that have PS2's than there are people that have Xbox 360's.

...I don't see any PS3 games on the chart. (Unless it's not released in the UK yet).'

There won't be many ps3 games in the charts, because buddy....we don't get it 'till march. I've got the Xbox 360, the reason why it's not beating the playstation is the fact that very few games are worth playing. Viva Pintata and PDZ are cool, GoW is horribly overrated and is suffering because of it. Lost planet looks interesting.

The playstation will probably keep a firm grip on the market for a while to come but because of the prices of both Xbox and Ps3, i feel that Wii will come out on top due to it's fun factor and cheapness. I'll end up getting ps3 and Wii myself though.

For potential, I'd say Ps3 is by far the best due to it's game library (mgs, Tekken, dmc ETC), but the wii is amazing and prooves that the Ps3 and Xbox will fail because they are overpriced because they spent too long fanny-ing around with the graphics.

I don't think some of you yahoos realize that it's an all-formats chart. So naturally a popular multi-platform game (e.g. FIFA) is going to sell more than a game that appears on just one console (e.g. Gears of War).

Zelda dropped out of the list because everyone that wanted zelda probably has it now. and with the lack of Wii consoles means that sales of games aren't going to rise as there are a,lot of people without a console yet. we'll need to wait a god 4-5 months before the Wii settles itself in the game charts with good games are released and more consoles released.

While you all scream GOW compare the graphics in GOW to the launch games like perfect dark. stomps all over it doesn't it? That is because developers have had time to understand how the console works and make good use of it. give the Wii a good few months before real decent games come out. For now at least Wii fans have some decent, funny, at least half entertaining mini-games like Wii play, the minigames in monkeyball, and a few others.

I dont get it. I played Zelda for 2 hours. It was a good game but theres way too much hype for it. And i also think why the heck Nintendo didnt up the graphics. Sure they were going for gameplay but man GOW is getting a lot of sales not because of gameplay but because how sickly awesome the graphics are. Zelda is still a good game though.

    ibot, nice avatar.

I played the new FIFA game around a week ago and I'm still not convinced they're anywhere near the level of quality the Pro Evolution team have obtained in their short (compared to FIFA) lifespan.

Im not supprised FIFA 07 is top, evey where i went when i was Christmas shopping afew weeks ago, everyone wanted to buy FIFA on the PS2, but it was sold out everywhere, was blatently going to be Number 1.

Also its seems Gears of War didnt spend much time at the top, 2 weeks i think, and then its floating around in the middle.

And Brain Training/Brain age... has been in the charts for around 6 months now... or something, its still there... its crazy...

I wonder why FIFA is at number one, this chart leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Gears Of War should have been at the top spot. But I've taken into account that not many people can afford a 360 or Wii (or get their hands on one) so obviously, it's no surprise. But FIFA, why FIFA? There's far more better games available for the PS2. It's a shame that genuine games are left out in the bitter cold. Oh well, at least I know I'm giving my attention to games that truly deserve it. I have a horrible feeling that Okami will be overlooked, that would be a crying shame.
