Leaving aside the fact that by 1404 the shape of the world had been pretty much settled for a thousand years or so, this game looks... fairly boring, actually. They seem to be going for a fairly simplistic looking/playing cartoonish feel, at least from the presentation in the trailer and the "Place object X next to Y number Zs" type gameplay.

Enjoy the peace and quiet that can only come from the company of dolls. Tea partys are a personal favourite.

i agree with takaetun to a small extent but that the same thing could be said about games like Medieval: Total War or Age of Empires - on top of that it looks like it will have absolutely amazing graphics for an RTS which is something i have been wanting to see this year

Ummmm, by 1404 very little was shaped and the age of discovery was barely in motion. What exactly are you talking about.

Looks almost the same as its predecessors (1602, 1503 and 1701). These were good games but very difficult.

I wonder, is there any combat system like Rise of Nations, or another sort?

Complicated you say ? I like complicated! I'm bored with all the click-fest games, it's about time to get my hands on some deeper strategy game

If you want to get a taste of this Anno buy 1701 AD, if you haven't already, it is the premiere city building, trade RTS, much better than AOE and Settlers.

The ANNO series is an extremely complex economic-civilization strategy game that includes a very sophisticated (and good looking) trade system by ship and by road.

How does it compare to SETTLERS? Well, there is no real comparison, as most of your trade will be by pirate riddled seas as you import and export from your own islands as well as your trade partners. Settlers is much more simplistic.

Having been an Anno fan since 1602 AD, and owning all three titles 1602, 1503 (I still play because it is different than 1701 in many ways) and 1701 (I still play), I am looking forward to this release.

This article has got me interested! ....and I don't typically go for these types of games.

"...street connections in this game are an absolute staple of a steady society..."

I believe this is a sarcastic statement. Personally, I feel that streets should have been an option (albeit a very important option that should be taken). After all, Black & White 2 has a rather ingenious feature, where the player's followers eventually pave a street of their own through wear and erosion as they travel a path, thus speeding up commuting.

All the girls below (drawn by a certain awesome but unfortunately not-so-well known fan artist) are actual game characters, though not THAT kind of games if you are thinking about THOSE. Can YOU guess who they are and which games they come from?

"Unhappy inhabitants had taken to the streets with torches because their demands for food had not been met (due to an incorrectly laid road), while production had stopped at both the cider farm and the hemp farm (due to a full warehouse). By being away for a few minutes and neglecting our city, we had lost buildings, money, and precious resources."

Uh-ugh. This is a symptom of poor balancing of the consequences of neglect of one segment to the benefits of focusing on another. As a civ-building game fan, I dislike having to return to a segment in upheaval just because I neglected it for a while.

Of course, the writer above deserves such a slap for having improperly placed the ever crucial streets, but seriously, can't the whiners simply walk across unpaved terrain to where they want to go? Or are streets introduced to simplify coding of transportation and movement of game objects like citizens and trade goods?

Sorry, but the Anno series is nothing like Stronghold or Black&White, Germa123. In fact, the Anno series is way better than both those rather limited games. The Anno series is closer to a cross between The Settlers, Age of Empires, and SimCity4, IMO. It combines the best elements of historical city building, but handles it in a light-hearted, fun-filled, graphically spectacular visual feast. Annon 1404 looks to be the best in the series.
