I was stuck here too. You need to go to the closet and talk to the parrot. He'll ask you for 10 buttons, but it doesn't matter if you don't have enough (I only had 5 by that point). He wants to make you happy, so he'll let you choose from 3 chests.
I don't know if it matters which one you pick (I picked the 'bear' one, in any case) but you should end up getting a snowglobe with Coraline's parents in it. The game is easy to follow from there. :)
