Claremont cowrites X-Men game

Iconic chronicler of Marvel's not-so-merry mutants scripts upcoming game with help of X-Men: The Last Stand screenwriter.

When X-Men first hit theaters in 2000, it gained acclaim for remaining faithful to the tone of the comic series, if not always the actual events. Activision hopes that same formula will yield similar success for its upcoming multiplatform X-Men: The Official Game.

In order to capture the tone of both the comics and the film, Activision enlisted renowned X-Men scribe Chris Claremont to cowrite the game with Zak Penn, who cowrote both X2 and this summer's X-Men: The Last Stand. Claremont handled the writing on the Uncanny X-Men comic for 16 straight years, a run that included classic story arcs like the "Dark Phoenix Saga," from which much of the film trilogy's main subplots are derived. Joining Claremont and Penn on the title is Chance Thomas, a game composer whose work has appeared in the King Kong, Lord of the Rings, and Unreal games.

The PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Xbox 360 editions of X-Men: The Official Game are being developed by Z-Axis, with Hypnos Entertainment handling the GameCube version. As far as the handhelds go, Amaze Entertainment is working on the DS game, while WayForward Technologies tackles the project for the Game Boy Advance. Finally, Beenox Studios is developing the game on the PC.

The PC and console editions of the game are rated T for Teen and the portable versions received an E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older. X-Men: The Official Game is scheduled to arrive at retail May 16.

Has anyone read Claremont's recent work though? To say he's lost it is an understatement. He did some great work in the past, but right now he's just writting nonsensical garbage.

Like anyone else here in the know, Claremont hasn't written anything worth while since about 1987, at best.

Did they ever explain WHY they marketed Wolverine's Revenge as a being a movie tie-in? It had NOTHING to do with X2. And even if it did, when did Movie Rogue gain the power of flight, and several other discrepancies.

Even if you have a good story with him writing, what about the gameplay? It looks like its going to be a quickly made game. Which means its going to be average at best.

whoa, the big guns. sad to hear the marketing ploy thing, right now. i tended to think of chris claremont as a name you can trust but i think he was an editor when i read comics. X3 looks amazing.

Claremont's recent run on X-men was pretty bad too. Personally I think his best days are long gone. If anything, this probably makes me more weary of getting the game.

Hmmm... Jim Lee helped with the Wolverine Rage game and it still didn't helped the sales.

Chris Claremont was the best X-men writer until the mid 90's. The early 90's had amazing storylines but it became worse by the years... sure, his peak was probably in the mid 80's and some would say before... but anyway.. it's cool! Claremont can write some pretty good stuff. Always good to see him work with the mutants.

Liefeld is pretty overrated.......his characters have more steroid issues than Barry Bonds. On the topic at hand, one can only hope that Claermont's writing contribution isn't just a marketing ploy and actually turns out to be something beneficial to the game.

Siege Perilous was bad, but the true dark ages started when he left the book and they started letting the artists write the books as excuses to draw TOTALLY KEWL characters. Hey, Liefeld, I don't think anyone needs 172 separate muscles in raise their arm
