UK Games Chart: Mario Kart No. 1, Brain Training breaks records

Nintendo's Mario Kart holds onto the number-one position, while Dr Kawashima's Brain Training marks a record-breaking 80th week in the top 10.

Nintendo has long enjoyed being a permanent fixture on the UK Chart Track Top 40, but this week's chart cemented the company's mastery of the long tail. Mario Kart Wii was released some four months ago, but this week holds onto the number-one position for a second week, while Dr Kawashima's Brain Training marks its 80th appearance in the Top 10. Chart-Track's Web site notes that the 80th weekly appearance beats the original Tomb Raider, making it a record-breaking appearance for Dr Kawashima.

Perhaps coinciding with the Olympics, the rest of the chart is filled with official tie-ins and other sports games. Wii Fit takes up second position, with stocks seemingly hitting British store shelves on a more regular basis, while Sega's Beijing 2008 and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games hit positions three and four respectively. THQ's Big Beach Sports is also proving to have legs despite a lukewarm critical reception, spending its ninth week in a row in the top 10.

No new releases make the All Formats Top 40, but two week-old games from Eidos and Empire make progress in the chart: Eidos' Summer Athletics is up from No. 25 to No. 12, and Empire's Off Road makes its first Top 40 appearance at No. 28. This Friday sees a few major releases, among them Tiger Woods 08 on all formats, and Ferrari Challenge on the Wii and PlayStation 2.

So it appears the so called "gimmick" "last-gen" etc. etc. are out living their due life. hmmm... the dunce people including Sony will have to hold their breath a little longer, say, 2-4 years.

The fad is here to stay. Nintendo are right where they belong. You understand?!

Can we PLEASE not have this multi machine chart any more?! It means nothing! Release a crappy game on 7 formats that sells a paltry 500,000 on each format and you get 3,500,000 sales. Now have a fantastic PC or 360 or whatever title that comes out on just one format that does really well and sells 3,000,000 copies and what do you get? The crappy multi-format title that actually sold poorly is at number one, and the fantastic game on one format is number two! I find this patently stupid!

So can we go back to what we used to have - top 10 charts for each of the major formats AS WELL AS the multi-format chart?! That way, we can see what's selling and not selling FOR OUR MACHINE, and then we can compare that with other machines, and finally we can see how it all changes with a multi-format chart!

Mario Kart is good game on the Wii it does deserve to be top of the charts mostly because it has good online play the only let down is people trying to hack it thats annoying. I can understand why Smash Bros Brawl is not at the top of the charts after all the delays in UK people in the UK just got it imported from America cause they were sick of waiting. To be honest there is no decent games out at the moment. Carnival Games, Big Beach Sports, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Beijing 2008 and Wall-E I don't understand why they are still in the top 10 there not that great to be in the top ten.

If the games in the UK were not released so late it would possibly change the UK chart but instead people just get imports from America. A fine example of this is Soul Calibur Legends it got released last year in America November 20, 2007 while us in the UK get it on August 28th 2008, Trauma Center: New Blood still no release date for it in the UK which it was released in America last year, Smash Bros Brawl released in America March 9th 2008 it was released in the UK June 27, 2008. It is ridiculous just how long it takes for all the good games to come out here.

Brain Age came out over two years ago. It's astonishing that it's up there.

As for Carnival Games and Beijing 2008, well... *violent shudder*
