Tomb Raider buoys Eidos' six-month results

Crystal Dynamics' latest multiplatform Lara Croft adventure sells 1.5 million through December 31; publisher revs rise 27 percent to £80.3 million.

Tomb Raider: Underworld may not have been the unbridled success that Eidos was hoping for, but the Crystal Dynamics-developed game certainly made a positive impact on the publisher's six-month sales. Today, Eidos reported revenues of £80.3 million ($115 million) for the six months ended December 31, a 26.7 percent climb compared to the same period a year ago. Losses before taxes for the period stood at £1 million ($1.43 million), a healthy recovery compared to the £75.1 million ($107 million) loss sustained during the back half of 2007.

Eidos also provided an update on sales for Tomb Raider: Underworld. Lara Croft's latest action adventure shipped 2.6 million units since its debut on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Wii, and DS in November. Actual units sold stood at 1.5 million, a sum that Eidos notes is higher than the two most recent Tomb Raider games, but less than initially planned.

In January, Eidos confirmed that it had reduced head count at Crystal Dynamics, with reports indicating that some 30 developers were let go. Today, Eidos officially confirmed that it has also shut down its Rockpool Games and Morpheme Game Studios, both of which dealt primarily with mobile and Web-based games.

Eidos also briefly addressed its ongoing plans to be acquired by Square Enix, a deal valued at £84.3 million ($120 million). The offer, which Eidos' board of directors unanimously approved earlier this month, is currently expected to be presented to shareholders for approval in March. Pending that outcome, Eidos expects the buyout to close by the end of April.

For the full year, Eidos expects revenues to fall between £160 million ($229 million) and £180 million ($257 million). During the final six months of its fiscal year ending June 30, 2009, it expects to release Batman: Arkham Asylum, Battlestations: Pacific, and Championship Manager 2009.

Tomb Raider Underworld is a very excellent and underrated game...wherever they take the series to, i hope it's as good as Underworld was, if not better.

Solid game. This was a close similarity to the original Tomb Raider, and far better then Tomb Raider Legend. If Eidos wants a sure stock raiser, release a next-gen Legacy of Kain.

You clowns who think that TR is going to be an RPG now because of SE are the same morons who thought that FF and DW were going to merge when Square and Enix merged.

    Seriously, enough.

ANIME STYLE TOMB RAIDER! pink haired lara croft who carries a giant sword that acts as a gun. And she goes to a Aztec ruin that leads her to find a big giant orb that teleports her to a underdeveloped planet and she meets human look alike with elven ears. Then lara realizes that the world is a gateway to earth and the world is going to end in 2012 because a giant dragon demon is going to use the underdeveloped planet to get to earth. She defeats the dragon with her new found acrobatics that can propel her to the top of buildings in one jump and her range of magic spells. And then she returns back to earth except its back in time when the Aztecs were alive, she found out that there were no writings on the orb so she writes clues for herself to find it.... then she.. uhh.. realizes that shes a clone? and she goes find her creator... and.. then she ends up in a futuristic school and becomes a "seed".... then she goes back in time again and saves the world from a tyrannical king. =D can't wait for a game like this

Although a bit on the short side, I really enjoyed Underworld. I think it deserves an 8-8.5, and if its going to get a lower score than that, than it should be blamed on it's length. (The camera is not as bad as most people think it is.)

As for the whole Squeenix thing, I just hope it doesnt take then 6 years to develop the next TR. And I hope to god they keep it focused on platforming ( although I personally would like to see more combat in it, much more combat. I mean Lara has some great guns and knows how to use them, just doesnt have to use them very often,) and not stats and the usual rpg stuff. I like RPGs but I think keeping it loosley stat based or not stat based at all would be the way to go. But what do I know? Im only a gamer with 22 years experience. For god sakes keep the combat real time. I BEG YOU SQUARE!!! HEAR MY PLEA!!!

Hmmm... didn't Eidos claim that the latest Tomb Raider was a flop and an embarassment?

Will they have new titles like Final Fantasy Tomb Raider? If do, that's gotta be fun combination. I want characters from FFVI and FFVII to do all the crazy acrobatics and cool storyline and action!
