EA dates Superman

Superman Returns will arrive alongside the DVD of its film inspiration November 22; GameCube version status unclear.

Electronic Arts announced today that Superman Returns, an action game based on the recent movie and 60-year-old comic book, will be released for the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Xbox 360 on November 20. The video game's arrival will coincide with the DVD release of director Bryan Singer's film Superman Returns later the same week.

EA's contribution to the book on the Man of Steel is intimately hooked in to Superman lore and history. The 100-plus missions have mainly been scripted from the comics, and the villains are all the traditional rivals, such as Lex Luthor, seen in print and in theaters. Additionally, EA managed to secure the rights to voices and likenesses from the recent movie.

All of Superman's signature powers in gameplay--super strength, fiery eyes, chilling breath, and faster-than-a-speeding-bullet flight--will be at players' disposal. Superman's invincibility is further accented through the unusual absence of a health meter. Instead, players will have to monitor the Man of Steel's stamina, which will be depleted with every use of a superpower. Approaching the sun will rejuvenate the character, and the game will re-create 80 square miles of the city of Metropolis.

The PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360 versions of the game are rated T for Teen. The Nintendo DS and GBA release is rated E for Everyone. Curiously, EA's announcement did not mention the GameCube version of the game; requests sent to EA to clarify its status were unanswered as of press time.

Well, it looks like the PSP version has been cancelled. There's been rumors flying around about this fact, and many people seem to agree the PSP version is no more....

As long as there's innovative ways to beat the baddies and less fetch quests, collectathons, and timed trials, I'd be happy. In fact, Shadow of the Colossus follows this formula, and it's one of the best games I've ever played in my life.

    aashkii, hilarious post.

I also avoid licensed games, I don't know why. I guess it's because they usually suck. The closest thing to a licensed game I ever played in recent memory was the X-Men Legends games. I guess I like to keep my movies, comics and video games separate.

It's sad, but not surprising, that there's no word on the GC version of the game. EA is notorious for bringing out their games on as many platforms as possible, and the fact that they're not mentioning the GC version only confirms what we already know, that the GC is pretty much dead.

    maaly81 - thanks dude, you're absolutely right

Jungul - by all means please 40-60 dollars on a game that was originally dated for 07 and is all of a sudden coming out in a month. i won't be the one to stop you. have you seen the gameplay footage for the game? i can already spot glitches on popping in the video they released as a trailer, and i can bet you that there'll be a ton more. would u rather have a finished complete game later? or just another half assed ea movie game now? frankly i don't really care which u decide, but at least get you're facts straight first.

"Meh, screw the GCN version, the GCN's dead, anyways. "

Same can be said for XBOX.

I dont know why Gamespot (or anyone else for that matter) is puzzled by the lack of news regarding the GC version seeing as EA has basically dropped support for GC a long time ago; due to the cost/reward ratio when developing multiplatform games when GC has the least market penetration. Its just simple business is all.

    Take it easy.

    @gnbfd:

"It can't be as bad as every other Superman game EA ever made. If it's worse than a certain *cough superman 64 cough* I'll pity EA while I play NBA 2K7"

...Superman 64 was made by Titus Software.

Python13 - What do you mean "so soon?" Are you kidding? This game was supposed to come out months ago and was delayed exactly for the purpose of QA. Get your facts straight.
