Namco opening Museum on DS

Collection of ported classics coming to Nintendo's dual-screened handheld; Namco Museum DS includes Pac-Man vs., Galaga, Xevious, more.

Namco (now Namco Bandai Games) has been releasing console collections of its arcade hits since the mid-1990s under the name Namco Museum. The series has hit just about every system in recent memory, and is adding one more to its list of consoles conquered this year.

The company today announced that it is working on Namco Museum DS, which is set for release this summer. The eight-game collection features several familiar names from coin-op arcades, including Pac-Man, Dig Dug II, Galaga, and Mappy.

Namco Museum DS will also include a version of Pac-Man vs.--a first for the series--the 2003 game created by Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto. This take on the famous franchise was designed for multiplayer action, as three gamers can play as the ghosts and chase after a human-controlled Pac-Man. Pac-Man vs. will also support game sharing, allowing four people to play using only one cartridge and four DSes.

Namco Museum DS includes the following:
Pac-Man
Pac-Man vs.
Dig Dug II
Galaga
Galaxian
Mappy
Xevious
Tower of Druaga

Namco Museum DS has not yet been rated by the ESRB and will retail for $19.99.

Pac-Man Vs. and Mappy alone make the game worth of it's $20.00 price tag

I hope Namco Bandai doesn't mess this up like they did with the GBA interations (due to you can't save your high scores)

Given Namco's back catalog this is about the best of what you could expect.

Even I'm starting to get sick of the games appearing on all platforms, and I live for retro.

I have the GBA version of this from way back, so Ill be skippin this.

Definitely worth it. While I already have all of them via the Namco Museum Classics for PS, this way it's portable and all on one (instead of 3 different disks). Added to Wish List.

(sigh) 8 games (one previously a console release) on this collection, yet on the recent Konami compilation, there are 15 games...FIFTEEN, which feature extensive extras.

I'm afraid I'll have to pass on this one. It's not the games themselves that are problem (at least not partially), but rather it's the fact that there are so few of them, plus there likely won't be any extras either. I'm beginning to wonder if Namco even cares anymore. Further, I'm beginning to wonder if Namco is biased towards the PSP...

A couple more games and that could warrant a purchase.

Nor a bad collection. Could have been a lot more extensive though.

These are great handheld games, really good for a few short rounds when you're on the go, but the Namco Museum for the PSP has more games. Of course, it doesn't have Pac-Man VS which sounds like a fun concept, though I'm not sure why it took a legendary game designer to come up with the idea of letting other players control the ghosts. (I assume there must be more to it than that.)

I'm also assuming that the reason for only eight games has to do with the limitations of the DS cartridge's memory compared with a CD / DVD / UMD.

Namco Museum on the GBA was good enough. Too many repeats here to warrant a purchase.

If Pac-Man Vs has Wi-Fi support, I'm picking this up.
