UK game charts: September 10-16

Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy jumps up from number three to number one, pushing Dead Rising off the top spot.

The Xbox 360-exclusive Dead Rising took the UK by storm a few weeks ago, becoming the fastest-selling 360 title to date and taking the all-formats number one slot in the sales charts in the process. It was a short-lived success, though, as Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy snatched the top slot for the week of September 10-16 and forced Capcom's zombie horror game to number two.

The latest top 10 games chart for the UK sees no debuts, with most games merely content to shuffle around a few places. Perennial chart residents New Super Mario Bros. and Dr Kawashima's Brain Training (known as Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day in the US) both gained places. Also making an impressive climb into the top 10 is the first Lego Star Wars game (originally released last year) at number nine--no doubt buoyed by the success of its sequel--and Cars, which jumps up one place to number four.

While five games improved their lot on the charts for the week, there were five that went the other way. Saints Row and Test Drive Unlimited each dropped one spot, to three and five respectively. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories has been in the top 10 for 13 weeks, but its grip is slipping as it fell to number eight. Meanwhile The Sims 2: Glamour Life Stuff dropped from sixth place to eleventh, nudged out of the number 10 spot by its parent game, The Sims 2.

One has to look further down the chart for new games, with only three games released during the week making the top 40. The highest new entry is Namco's PlayStation Portable game Tekken: Dark Resurrection, which despite strong reviews only managed to enter at number 12. Sega's Yakuza arrived at number 20, while THQ's Broken Sword: The Angel of Death limped in at number 33.

If Lego Star Wars II wants to keep its spot on top for more than one week, it will have to fend off a number of high-profile new releases in the UK. The week of September 17-23 is set to see The Godfather finally reach the Xbox 360, while LMA Manager 2007 and NHL 07 are also released on the console. EA Sports stablemate Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 arrives on the PlayStation 2, PC, PSP, and Xbox. Speaking of the PSP, the budget-priced Metal Gear Solid Digital Graphic Novel will also be thrown into the mix.

I just checked that link and it says nothing specifically about the 360 version. It has a link that does a search on spong, and that search happens to come up with the 360 version. That's no indication IMO that this was referring to the 360 version of the game specifically.

No. 1 is Lego Star Wars 2: The Original Trilogy for the PS2. No. 9 is the original Lego Star Wars for the PS2, released over a year ago. It's been selling again due to the fact that the second one is now released.

Position 9 is Lego Star Wars 1, not the new one. Check the release date.

Ali_Bubble_67: Looks like the UK is going to be the last region to jump on the DS bandwagon. There are two DS titles in the top ten. Considering that those titles only appear on the DS and 2 of the titles above them were multi-platform that is very good.

Trust me, the DS is very popular in the UK.

It's not just that Gamespot listed the PS2 game cover. It's that it specifically lists the PS2 version in the description of the list winners. It's also that in previous lists of this type, different versions of games released on multiple platforms were highlighted individually. Football games from the last two weeks already highlight this.

I have no reason to doubt you specifically, but I do have reason to doubt that your conclusions on the list are correct.

I'm curious about the accuracy of the chart seeing as Lego Star Wars for the PS2 makes it into the charts twice. Position 1 and 9.

1: "LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy
    Publisher: LucasArts Developer: Traveller's Tales
    Platform: PS2 Category: Action Adventure"

    9: "Lego Star Wars
Publisher: Eidos Interactive | Platform: PS2 | Category: Action Adventure"

What people don't understand about the multi-format chart, which is why it was originally a trade only chart and I do not think it should be used for public sale indications, is that it entirely depends on how many formats a game is released on!

A game is released on XBox 360 only and sells a miilion copies. Another game comes out on XBox 360 AND PS2 AND PC and sells 400,000 on each format - total 1.2 million sales. Now what is the more popular game? A game that sells 1.2 million across 3 formats or one that sells a million based on one format? That surely is very subjective - and that's why this multi-format chart should not be used. Charts should be definite, not subjective. If it's subjective, what is the point of it - for public consumption, I mean? it's just confusing. Hence the comments here every week.

    Smartiepants
You'd think from the way that story puts it that Dead Rising had suddenly flopped - in fact, it's still selling by the truckload and is easily Capcom's biggest success for years.

Dude...Resident Evil 4 came out last year, so Dead Rising is not Capcom's biggest success for years. It's there biggest success recently, and rightly so!
