Driver: San Francisco – a very fun ride which adds a little story to a great racing game

User Rating: 7.5 | Driver: San Francisco X360
Back in my old days, when I was a PC gamer, there was this racing game, which I had very fond memories of. The first Driver was a game I played a lot, so when its most recent installment came out I had my sight set on getting it and see how the series have progressed since the old days. I picked up Driver San Francisco recently and the game provided me with a ton of fun, driving through the very well-crafted city of San Fran.

Story
Driver SF is not your typical racing game. It adds a little charm, it adds a little humor, it adds a little story. It revolves around (no surprise) John Tanner, a skilled driver, working for the police force. When the dangerous criminal Charles Jericho escapes from prison, John Tanner and his partner Tobias Jones are caught in pursuit. The mission is aided by Tanner's "acquired" ability to SHIFT. Shifting is the major innovation, presented in Driver SF. You can take control of any vehicle and use it to your advantage in the vast amounts of missions to complete. The story adds some twists, even though some would think it is a cliché throughout the gaming industry. You can also complete different side missions along with the main story, which give you extra Willpower. Willpower is the currency of the game. You can purchase new cars or garages or upgrade your current vehicles with it. 7/10

Graphics
The scenery of Driver SF is excellent. The city is presented in its entire beauty in excellent fashion. The streets are busy, the buildings and areas are gorgeous. The cutscenes are decent and the cars are very realistic. 8.5/10

Sound/Voice Acting
The soundtrack of Driver SF is very good. While driving you can listen to different radio stations with different music and tracks. The voice acting is excellent as well. 9/10

Gameplay
Driver San Francisco is a racing game. Its driving mechanics are very good as you would expect. The major innovation as already mentioned is the ability to "shift". Shifting is a technique that you would need to master (timing especially) to successfully complete some missions. The game also includes multiplayer modes, local split screen coop and competitor modes. The re-playability is very high as there are hundreds of free play missions to complete – from street racing to checkpoint and timed races. 8/10

Overall
Driver San Francisco is a game I can definitely recommend. It is not the greatest racing game, but adding a storyline makes it quite fun and addicting. It has a lot of play time in it and provided me with ton of excitement for the week that I played it. 7.5/10
