Sega Gamer's Day 2000: Sega Unleashes World Series Baseball 2K2

With online play and the ability to actually control your fielders, WSB 2K2 looks like an attempt to make up for last year's mess.

Today at Sega's Executive Gamers Summit, Sega announced the development of World Series Baseball 2K2, the second Dreamcast installment in the World Series Baseball franchise. With promises of online play, and the return of fielder control, 2K2 is looking to compensate for the lukewarm reception its predecessor, World Series Baseball 2K1, received.

The biggest upgrade from last year's WSB is obvious - online play. With WSB 2K2's network mode, Sega promises head-to-head play against an opponent, as well as the ability to participate in online tournaments, view online player rankings, chat, and view roster updates. Aside from the new online mode, WSB 2K2 is set to feature five other modes of play, including exhibition, season, playoffs, franchise, and home run derby.

In response to players' dissatisfaction with the lack of fielder control in WSB 2K1, this feature will return in 2K2. To help add to the simulation aspect of the game, players will be able to create up to four different starting line-ups and batting orders, tweak their pitching staff, and create, trade, and train players. Sega also promises increased realism, with varying uniform and field conditions, full licensing of every MLB team and stadium, and multiple commentators.

With the bevy of improvements being promised, the WSB series looks like it might reach the same level as the other Sega Sports titles. World Series Baseball 2K2 is currently scheduled for a Spring 2001 release.
