Sega Sports NBA 2K1 Hands-On

Basketball is back on the Dreamcast, this time with full online support. But that's not the only change for this year's version, as Visual Concepts has made some interesting tweaks to the gameplay.

I'm not sure yet, after only an hour of play, whether the changes made to NBA 2k1 are welcome additions or not. Other than the obvious addition of online play -- which, by the way, seems to work incredibly well -- Visual Concepts decided to add a looser, highlight-reel feel to the game. They've added things like sweet swat blocks, a cool new crossover, juiced up the athleticism of all the players, and added new celebration animations and the ability to push on defense.

In fact, the game seems to have inched more towards frantic hoops action this year, somewhat like in EA's NBA Live series, slightly speeding up the pace. Although, I'm not sure this should worry fans of the straight simulation aspects of the series, as being a huge hoops fan, I still liked the faster action. The game allows for more fast breaks -- as the long range passing is much easier in this year's version -- while the half-court defensive AI seems to have remained the same.

The graphics are slightly improved over last year's version. The presentation and camera angles have been tweaked, while the player models look more realistic and are animated just as proficiently. Some of the new dunk animations and the new crossover and spin animations look excellent, while the swat block can be absolutely hilarious at times.

NBA 2k1, with online multiplayer action, will be released for the Dreamcast in Fall 2000. GameSpot will bring you more details.
