Spring TGS 2001: Hands-onHeavy Metal: Geomatrix

Capcom's licensed multiplayer combat game poked its head out of the sand at Spring TGS. Hands-on info inside.

TOKYO - Capcom announced its intention to make a Heavy Metal-licensed deathmatch game back in January, but we haven't been able to play it until now. The game was shown in its arcade and Dreamcast forms, and sticks pretty closely to Capcom's similarly-themed Spawn game. Heavy Metal is focused more on pure combat in small arenas. You run, jump, and dash along the playfield, picking up weapons as you go. You can also execute a small combo attack when you get close to your enemies. The game is four-player, allowing you to play free-for-all matches or two-on-two or two-on-one team battles.

Graphically, the game is about on-par with Spawn, though the game seems to move a little slower than Spawn did. The game features some licensed music, including contributions from the band Megadeth. Heavy Metal: Geomatrix is scheduled to come to the US sometime in Q2 of this year.
