Kevin VanOrd plunges a sword into the heart of this video review for Dragon's Dogma.
i m sorry to say that , to hell with MGS , it was one of my favorite game but i m not gonna be forced to own a system to play a game , i was with ps2 then xbox360 and my main was pc not gonna buy new console , whats up with game on pc and the consoles and they let the customer chose ...
So what does that mean? That it's good? Or that it's bad? Or in between? What?!? I hate reviews like this... ~_~ Please explain yourself, Kevin.
I got this game when it first came out and I am still at the beginning. haha
That dragon looks pretty bad. But overall the game looks pretty fun, I hope I get it for xmas.
a bit like an easy dark souls, with a slighly more coherent story. The best RPG combat on consoles ever, leaves games like Skyrim looking distinctly last generation. You climb on an ogres back he plucks you off and tries to bite you head off, if you get in the middle of his back he jumps up landing on his back (squashing you), just fantastic, reactive stuff :D Makes games like Skyrim & Mass Effect look stiff and stale, time for the big boys to raise their game :D
@xeis-net i've read that Kingdoms Of Amalur has the best RPG combat.did you played that?
@skybluearmy At least it doesn't crash. Skyrim is notorious for that. This at least doesn't seem to do that. ~_^
This is an awesome game, but like Kevin VanOrd pointed out, the traveling is really cumbersome. The good thing is it forces you to engage with a ton of baddies on the way from point A to point B, and you need all the extra experience and loot you can get.
And there /is/ a way to change your pawn's settings--once you have your main pawn, sit down in the chair at any inn. Your pawn will ask you questions, and based on how you answer their behavior will change the next time you go adventuring.
Lastly, it's definitely not a hack-and-slash game--if you blindly bash buttons, you'll die really quickly. It's a lot of fun and I definitely recommend it to all RPG lovers.
@kismettle FINALLY, a REAL reviewer! Thank you! It's the same thing with Demon Souls... if you think you're going to get away with button mashing, you're in for a harsh wake up call. Playing the demo was a pleasant surprise... I wasn't sure quite what to make of this game at first but now that I see what the gist of the combat is about, I'm ready to try it again. ^_^
Really fun game... a great example that graphics and hype alone don't make a game fun. Looking forward to the sequel.
@dawnofhero Actually, I didn't think it looked that bad... Hmmm, must just be me. ^_^ I don't really find it fair that they only review things using the 360. Use the PS3 more. Maybe if they did they might get a better result in the graphics department?
@regix416_basic Yeah, they do seem to cling to the 360 a lot when reviewing games, unless they absolutely HAVE to use the PS3 like if it's Uncharted or The Last Of Us. Prob because the 360 is a hipster console... any-who, the graphics in DD aren't terrible, but they look a bit dated when compared to other games imo. Still one of my favorite games of 2012 :)
@dawnofhero @regix416_basic Hmmm, I understand the 360 DOES run some games better, but this was probably not one of the better examples of it. I'd heard that it actually runs BETTER on the PS3 so why on Earth would they use a 360 here? Just room for thought.
But choosing one system over another out of preference is just silly if you ask me... especially if you know it will run better on another one. Graphically speaking, I prefer the PS3 in some instances but when it comes to other games like shooters, sometimes I prefer the 360... if only they didn't focus so heavily on multiplayer so much... Halo 4 and Gears of War and even Crysis 2 look better on the 360 than I think they would on the PS3. I haven't played 3 yet though... want to, just haven't gotten around to it yet. Is the original Crysis out for the 360 yet? Now that might be an interesting test. To see which system looks better... the PS3 or the 360. I probably couldn't run the PC version up to the max so I haven't even tried to buy it.
This game looks really good. The lighting and animations look amazing. Looking forward to getting it soon.
I recently borrowed this game from a friend because of the sporatic reviews and talk of this game. I didn't really have any expectations and actually was quite surprised at how much I am enjoying it. Yes, the graphics need some tweeking and the pawns are annoying during combat. That aside, I like the strategy it requires but do not like the long travel times and it does play on my patience. I personally would not buy this game but it is definitely worth a rent or borrow if you can get your hands on it. :)
I have only played the demo, and while it was fun, it didn't give me much reason to want it. They should have at least maybe added a trailer to the end or something. If it turns out to be an open-world game like i've heard, that might make me consider purchasing it.
I tried the demo and I must say that the demo is far too short, and doesnt show anything that would convince me to buy this game. Ive spent more time at character creator (at least its good) than on gameplay itself. Not to mention horrible framerate and constant camera zooms on companions are really annoying during the fight, oh and Ive seen better Chimera in God of War 3. Ill stick to Dark Souls.
An old school hack-n-slash where you create you own character and slay all monsters, while roaming an ancient open world? Sign me up!
I liked the demo, so I'll be getting the full game as well!
Old school game, not easy by any means but not hard either with a pocket full of potetn greenwaithe or whatever they re called.Dont mind the running around instead of porting which you can get if you can afford it!!!
Some of the best monsters and Battles ive seen in a long time, love the Goblin chiefs playing the bugle to rally troops, well done capcom, bring on RE6 :)
See Im old school and im totally engrossed with the travelling and not having it easy to port from one place to another in the click of a Button.Yes its frustrating running into a chimera and getting your ass kicked at night and then Dire wolves come to the party but the save system is there and just save every few minutes.
Well done capcom for the awesome combat and the sorceres spells especially Bolide are spectacular. This game is by no means easy but it doesnt hand it to you on a plate like most games do these days either......
I agree. Dragon's Dogma has a very unique style of its own....but it holds itself as a solid game very well. I'm surprised that Gamespot gave it such a high review compared to other reviews (EGM; Game Informer; etc) and I would rate this game somewhere in the 8's or higher easy. For this they have seem to get the rating & review pretty spot on. I can unfortuantly tell you this is a love it or hate it game for most because there's many people who don't seem to like either the pawn system, far traveling, story, or whatever.....so this game is definatly not for everybody. If you have been waiting for something new to try compared to the same old thing over and over, I highly suggest you give this a try.....easily worth a rent at the least if your extreamly doubtful, but definatly worthy of some of your free time :)
I'm nearing the end of my first play through....absolute amazing. Especially considering that the game was already confirmed to have a sequel - good sales so far! I just wish you could buy Port Crystals from the get go haha :(
Definitely going to do the New Game+!
This game is really fullfilling, specially going thru classes. i find the most exciting to play is as sorcerer or mage getting into the high level spells and what ever cause I never usually play a magic type but goodness....pulling of those spells are amazing looking, the character movement before, after and during spell intoning is just crazy good first time pulling off the Ice spire spell I literally said out loud as chills went down my spine "good god!" ...it's just cause I have never seen such display put into a games class like that
@cosades2002 Yeah... hopefully the DLC will be a free update. Kinda doubt it but if it updates the graphics and the story, maybe it'll fix things enough to battle all of the bad publicity.
i like this game but the story is awful, if it had at least a better story with a few unexpected twist and turns this game would be a game of the year contender
I haven't bought a big game since Dark Souls. Borrowed a few here and there, but I had to but this based on peoples comments. I never trust Game Spot. It isn't a perfect game at all, but it is a very good game. Best character and boss animations i have seen for a while, especially in cut scenes and boss fights. Just, I hate the time it takes to change armor and switch to other players; inventory very frustrating, plus the bloody map screen is nowhere near accessed fast enough. Plus commands to pawns is so much easier and more efficient in other games. But very innovative game. Recommend easily. Thanks
oh dear god... how long must we suffer these cnet commercials... i remember the norton ads but those were funny and varied... this one is just irritating
Something Capcom had something to do with that didn't turn out terrible! Amazing.
@Alter_Echo well capcom wasn't expecting this to be that sucessful , so the devs got to make the game without higher-up interference. there was no "We need to make this more accessible" , or make it co-op and take out the rpg elements... or "turn it into a shooter and drop inventory" , all elements from other franchises that when the sequels were made things like that happened to. (can you guess the games I am refrencing, no their not all capcoms).
I have a feeling since they already announced a sequel, it will be made "accessible" to the casual auidenance and the charm of the game will be gone. I foresee less or no stats. More action and less customization. I hope I am wrong, but my gut and past experience with publishers says otherwise.
Not bad review, keven is a tough game critic though and at the end of the day it seens like he got it spot on, ill find out when i test the game for my self. After halo 4 and all the other games come out ill check this out looks sweet thought especially the boss fights.
I've been playing this for a week now and it's a really fun game. Fast paced fights with a hack and slash fighting system that works very well thanks to a lot a of good moves and augments you pick up along the way. If you collect these skills from different classes you can build a Beast of a Character. Also, the pawn team you select works really well, because they're easy to manage and function well during combat with simple orders.
Does it have combat only? What about other things like player's own missions or side missions & errands & what about love & relationship?
Weewt!!! Just plat'd it.150 hrs.lvl 1055 play throughs xDKilled Ur dragon 6 times offline/2 times online. This game is a beast, imho anyways. one of those games where you can keep playing through ng ++++ cause its so addicting
Also...QUICK TRAVEL, yes there is quick traveling , I don't most reviewers played it enough to realize you can have atleast 7 port crystals and zip around everywhere...come on now, quit whinging about no quick travel or how you don't have it in the beginning. It's an RPG...you have to earn and work for it,
