Well with the last Final Fantasy installment now out on PSN (FF Origins) I have to wonder if the only DQ chapter on PSX will now get a digital rebirth.
    -fingers crossed-

I doubt it since none of the Dragon Quest games are on VC or PSN. Dragon Quest games do not usually get ported, they are usually remixed so they can get more money.

What's a more awkward title? Final Fantasy II or the Neverending Story II?

Possible...yet DQ7 hasnt been remade yet so a PSN drop is possible! Im hoping! It better not end up as a 3ds port or something like that or Im SOL. Def wanna see it on PSN!

I doubt it, Square Enix does not put any Dragon Quest games on PSN or Wii Virtual Console. Luckily I still have this game on PlayStation.

Highly unlikely, you"ll ever be able to download it. Although, it's an rare possibility that it might be released eventually... As in 7-10 years!! I wouldn't count on it,though.

I would bet a lot that a rerelease or remake is in the works or is at least planned. There is no way it isn't - every other game in the series up to 7 has been rereleased and 7 is the odd one out. It is easy money - a beloved game in a beloved series. I would have expected the DS a couple years ago, but now that the 3DS is in full swing, I don't know anymore.

Unfortunately, all we can do is wait. Why they haven't released this on the PSN is beyond me. It is very upsetting that such an awesome game can't be made readily available. I would buy it in a heartbeat.

the only reason, it wouldn't be released on PSN, is perhaps, the game is either not selling enough to be even considered on the list, or would even get downloaded. Or, the fact that it still its a PS1 game, so therefore it can be played on the PS3, and to anyone that wants it, they can buy it themselves..

Re-releases?Well, it was on Sony PS1, so trying to port it over, might take a lot of work to even consider re-releasing it on some other platform.. Also, since it wasn't a big hit, it wouldn't really be high on the list to be well, either port it over to some other system, or just do a re-make of it, that's more optimized.

I expect a remake for this game soon. They were busy doing 4, 5, and 6 remakes on DS which is why this game was not on DS. But perhaps 3DS, or better yet PS3 so we can play the game on TV instead of handheld.

My best guess would be the remake goes on 3DS though since DQ tends to stick with Nintendo.

I've been wrong before, but I highly doubt we'll be seeing a remake on the PS3. SE aims for the systems that have a wider ownership for DQ. This is why the Wii and DS were targeted and not the XBOX, PS3, etc. I'm going to say 3DS or Wii if we get a remake, 3DS if it's a port. Although just by judging the higher quality of the remakes for the DS, I think a remake with slightly upgraded and more detailed graphics for dungeons is likely.

You guys saying there's going to be a remake need to read past threads on this. The same reasons why it's highly unlikely we'll ever see a PSN release also make it highly unlikely we'll ever see a remake.

    Err...no.

PSN release means the game is released as is, no changes to the engine, no updates, just coded so it plays on the playstation emulators and has a trigger mechanism to "switch data discs." This means all parties involved would have to agree with such a release, as SE does not wholly own DQ7. It is split in pieces, as virtually all DQ's have been. Armor Project, Sugiyama, Bird Studio, and Arte Piazza (formerly Heartbeat) own their own shares of the game.

This doesn't mean it won't happen, but it makes it highly unlikely. However, although Horii has stated in the past he doesn't like to port games, he prefers remakes, though the last six "remakes" were technically ports as little was changed and nothing truly added, the games were only remakes because they were rebuilt from the ground up (DQ4 DS, DQ5 DS, DQ6 DS, DQ1 + 2 Cell Phone, and DQ3 Cell Phone).

So who knows. Plus DQX changes things around a lot, as it's the first time an in-house studio is building the game engine, so we don't even know what level of control and what Bird Studio "owns" of the game. While this strictly DQX, it could mean Horii is more open to letting SE handle more management decisions for the series directions in other areas, such as remakes and ports.

This is a very different argument for why they won't make remake the game. The only argument you can make there is one statement made by Horii a long time ago where he stated he wouldn't remake DQ7 because of the length of the game. There's just too much to consider. Then again, DQ8 and DQ9 spent more time in development than DQ7 ever did, so I'm sure that sentiment is out the window.

Remaking would be far more plausible for SE anyhow, as it means they do not have to ask permission from the developer studio given the remake will likely use a new engine. Or they could go with Arte Piazza, in which case they'd likely use the revamped version of the toolset they created for the original, and have used for every release they've worked on since. Working with Arte Piazza again wouldn't matter as it means a brand new contract that has nothing to do with their old contract, so they won't be paying royalties or other excess payments out, just as it would work if they went with any other studio.

There is nothing really to stop them making a remake of the game save the original point that the game has so much data they fear the production costs due to time would be too high to ensure profit, even considering the game is likely to sell over 1mil, and given it's DQ7, it might well sell 2m as a remake. Remakes are supposed to be considerably cheaper than the original, and they almost always use engines and systems that are well established to ensure tremendous reduction in cost.

Very different arguments W_R. Though in the end, while it's unlikely we'll see either a port or a remake, it's plausible we'd see a remake sometime in the future. I'd guess on a portable. As others have said, it's extremely unlikely we'll see a port given the legal rigamorale SE would have to go through, and the amount of money spent on PR just convincing every party involved to do so.

Also, according to an old 1UP.com article and other articles, Sony might have helped in publishing / development Dragon Quest VII, so that is a reason why it won't appear on a Nintendo console.

Also, ever wondered why VII is not mentioned at all on Fortune Street..?

That's an interesting point, but it's not true, and it's an easy thing to check: any place the official game box, or game shows copyright info. Whatever company/ies are listed are those who officially own the game and the respective data therein. Sony is not mentioned on the US box save as the company licensing the game for use on the Playstation console (this appears for every game period, regardless of publisher/developer).

So no, Sony has absolutely no say, no power, no anything in the fate of DQ7.
