Someone recommended this game to me but I don't know much about it.

I'm a longtime Pokemon/RPG gamer, if that helps you help me.

I have just one thing to say: don't be in a hurry to get monsters that grow very slowly. These will be the ones that take 100 XP to level up the first time. You don't need monsters like that before you beat the Starry Night Tournament. You'll do fine with monsters that grow faster.

See, the thing about slow growing monsters is that you have to grind them for a really long time before they begin to learn their better skills, which means that you're fighting with a crappy monster for a long time. I know that some people aren't bothered by this, but most people get tired of such grinding.

As you level your monsters, some skills will be replaced by improved versions (such as Blaze being replaced by Blazemore). Damage from most skills doesn't increase, though (a level 30 monster would do as much damage with Blaze as a level 3 monster), so if you aim for six-way maxes, *most* damage-dealing skills (even the final versions) will eventually be obsolete.

Also, when you breed monsters, the offspring's stats depends on the parents' stats. While you can breed monsters as soon as level 10, unless you're trying to pass skills, waiting for level 20 (or even higher!) is usually a better idea.

Eh, early game I'm not so good with. I guess work for a KingSlime and some other decent monsters like Grizzly, Unicorn and Roboster.

Mid-game? KingLeo, GoldGolem, etc. are all fantastic.

I'd say around the time you beat the Gate of Anger.

I just beat Rank F and got access to the breeding chamber, and I'm rather surprised that the good ole Slime has been rather competent so far (I'd thought he'd be similar to a Caterpie, Rattata or similar early game Pokemon), he and the Healer have pretty much been in my team the whole game so far and haven't run into any snags (I started with an anteater but it was far too glass-cannony, even the Healer had better durability, so I ditched him for a Dracky, who was a little better but still didn't seem to be worthwhile, finally settled on the Dragon and the Golem for now). But I think it's too early to conclude anything yet.

Remember, never breed unless they're at least level 20. It's a surefire way to guarantee that you'll have stronger children.

Hold onto it; Skydragon can be used to breed a very useful monster later on.

Is it possible to recruit monsters owned by an opponent in the dungeons?

Yes. It's done the same way you'd ordinarily recruit (defeat all monsters except the one you want, throw a lot of meat, and pray).

Ah well, I could've had an opportunity to recruit a metal slime just before I did the Rank E matches if that was the case then. Had several porkchops and ribs on hand at the time and my team all had 0 WLD.

After having a lot of trouble with the BigEye boss in one of the dungeons, I don't think my Slime/Healer/Gremlin trio is going to cut it anymore.

Slib, Hale, and a Gremlin I recruited are about to reach Lv20, what monsters would you recommend they be bred with (while I level grind some more)?

Besides the SkyDragon egg, I currently have in my ranch:
    Demonite
    Floraman
    Beanman
    1EyeClown
    Dracky
    Anteater
    GoHopper
    Dragon
    Golem
    Goopi
    Stubsuck
    DragonKid
    MadCat
    MiniDrak
    FaceTree
    SpotSlime
    BigRoost
    EvilSeed
    Crestpent
    Almiraj
    FangSlime

Slib with a Bug for Snaily isnt a Bad idea.
My Snaily is made from same method with level 10, and the stats are AWESOME.

Dunno bout the other though. I usualy go for Insect route what with Stagbug and later Hornbeet being a really broken monster
