So, one of my new resolutions is to finally (after multiple attempts in the last decade) finish the NES version of Dragon Warrior 3 (I've finished 1, and 2 on GBC). Then finish DW 4.
To make it amusing, I've named all the characters after people on the show LOST that was on American TV for 6 seasons.
.
Hero - Hugo
Pilgrim - Jack (because he heals, duh)
Wiz - Sun
Soldier - Jin
Soldier - Sawyer
Fighter - Kate
Merchant - Claire (I gather one of these is needed later)
Didn't make a Goof-off, but if I do, Charlie is definitely the name to give him.
There's a certain charm about these really old games that I enjoy, and I don't usually mind grinding. Currently all party members are level 5 or 6.

I don't believe the names can be more than 4 characters long. And you are really going to name the hero (who also gets heals) after Huge-O the most worthless person on the show?

Names are 8 letters long, with the first four shown on battle and menu screens.

Let's get Dangerous.

Aside from the fact that I LIKED Hugo, there is a very specific reason why he gets to be the Hero (which I am omitting because it's a spoiler for anyone who didn't watch the show.)
And I know the Hero heals too, but the Pilgrim's MAIN JOB is to heal - hence, Jack.
As far as the 4 character name limit, you may be thinking of the GBC version of this game.

I've decided to make a resolution finish this game as well... lol
my party is named after my cats and an old wow character i have. but I'm going a kind long route to leveling my characters. instead of class changing at 20 I'm class changing at 40. i think this gives better benefits with what i intend to do. i intend to class change twice and get essentially 3 sages.
my party
Dan ( hero)
Stella (fighter changed to soldier at 40 and will change to sage at again once soldier is 40.)
Tora (pilgrim changed to wizard at 42 then will change to soldier once last spell is learned as wizard.)
rhiste (wizard changed to pilgrim at 40 then will change to soldier once last spell is learned as pilgrim.)
hero will be at about 48 when I'm done with all the changing and about 57 once the rest of my characters hit 40 again =p. but i'll essentially have 3 sages (but will be soldiers with every spell.

Well, I just picked up the ship from the King of Portoga. Everyone is level 16 or 17. I guess it's time to level up, and explore to see what other cities have problems to solve. I also have a merchant level 10 I have been working on slowly for later.

.... and now I just dropped off my Merchant - who is only level 11 - in the little clearing where the guy wants to create a new town. Does it make any difference what level the Merchant is when you first put her/him in that starter town to help it grow?

Nope

I haven't been playing every day, so I'm still only around level 19. Currently near the town of Baharata getting my soldier up to level 20. I was planning to change him to a fighter at that point. (I hope that's a good plan, it sounds like fighters > soldiers in the late game.)
I'm also leveling my goof-off up a little more (currently level 11). He hasn't really been annoying, but that's probably because the other 3 are level 18 or 19 right now - he sings, contemplates the situation, and hits the enemy more often than I expected him to.
What I'm planning to do is to end up with 2 sages and a fighter/ex-soldier along with the hero.
Will 2 sages be competing for limited equipment? It just seems like a good idea to have 2 for the later areas in the game, from older threads it seems that a wizard is less useful.

Well I was walking around the Pirate's Town. It seems that most/all? the enemies are Bluebeaks and Kongs, so I have hero, my pilgrim, my goof-off, and my wizard and I'm trying to get the latter two up to level 21.
Managed to wipe out my party just now, but I'll go back there. I still need to pick up the Orb in town, I was grinding my way through the night time. That will be the second Orb I have. I don't know what they are for, but I assume they get stuck in the bank until I have them all.
Hugo - 21 Hr
Jack - 21 Pr
Charlie - 18 Gf
Sun - 19 Wz.
5 minutes later:
Okay, now this is odd. I had returned to Aliahan to revive my 3 dead characters, saved at Luisa's Place where you create characters, then took a quick break, closing the game. When I returned to the game, instead of putting me in front of the King, I was in front of the Dharma Shrine. I guess when the guy at the shrine brings you back from the dead, saving the game THERE counts more than when you save at Luisa's?
Jan 22, 2012 8:17 pm GMT
You can't save at Luisia's she just registers created characters and your party on the scrolls of honor. If you aren't given the option to stop your adventure you didn't save your game. I wouldn't give up on a Soldier if you enjoy it. While a fighter may be better, it is still fun to gear out a soldier with your gold and Soldiers are still really good.

I actually kind of enjoy the grinding in the Dragon Warriors for the NES, specifically the grinding you do in the very beginning of each game - I don't know how to explain it, but the feeling of walking out of the first town and preparing for the journey ahead is wonderful, and you really get a sense of completion when you slowly but surely get to buy all the equipment in that first town.
I like this especially in DW3 and DW4, for some reason, probably because they are more crisp, clear and detailed, so it's extra pleasant to rest your eyes on the screen while leveling.
Jan 27, 2012 8:15 pm GMT
Well, it looks like I have a few levels to grind. I've killed the Boss Troll, and I think the next things are getting some items at the Elf Village, finding the Phantom Ship, and then trying to get to the Cave of Necrogond, and through it. There might be a couple of steps I left out.
Hugo is 29, Jack 28 (Pilgrim), Sun is 22 (Sage), and Kate is 21 (Fighter).
For the Cave, what should my lowest character's level be? Is 30 really necessary?

Just made it to the World of Darkness.

I am in the world of darkness as well. I have taken a few days off since punishing Baramos.
