Going Retro

User Rating: 9.5 | Dragon Quest VI: Maboroshi no Daichi DS
I'm a huge fan of the DQ series which is not surprising as i'm a Turn-Based RPG Gamer at heart.
All DQ titles start with atleast a 9/10 for me, even before i've played them, simply because they stick to what they know best, Simplicity.
Which is a great way to describe DQ: VI, simple and easy to pick up and play.

It's a very good remake and apart from a few name changes (To keep up with the times i guess) it's very true to the original.
Graphically superb effort to keep it retro and colourful, and the cheesy humour is spot on as usual.

The story can seem a lil' confusing at first as it chucks you in the deep end, but as you make you're way though its story you really do grow to want more and more. Plenty of characters to choose from with lots of unique battle styles to master and if you like exploring then the world map is going to be right down your street.
Technically 4 Worlds to uncover, Real, Dream, Underwater and another one i wont explain.
3 of them having hidden locations to explore extensively.

I have completed the game, plus secret ending with just over 80 hours gameplay and was very happy all the way through.
Though without spoiling the ending, it is not the best of endings in the series.

Battles are turn based with the normal Attack, Defend, Magic, Steal and such to choose from, level cap being 99.
Exp i found is tougher than other DQ's further on from VI, you're being tested to grind as much as you can to level up.
Vocations (Styles), which unlock you further Magic and abilities along with 3 secret Vocations. You can master Vocations by doing up to 300 battles for the higher up ones, others needing less battles, but all worth it.
Everything works well together with the flexibility of you deciding how you go into battle, though most bosses focus on you relying on Physical Damage rather than Magic in the end.

All is good in the world of DQ VI so i happily give a 9.5 and hope it's enjoyed by many others.

Cheers for reading :)
