A new take on Dragon Ball Z games. Strategy and cards still keep the DBZ touch.

I had no idea what this game was going to be about, but when I got it I absolutely loved Dragon Ball Z. I'm still playing it every now and then today.

The game takes you from the beginning of the Saiyan Saga to the end of the Kid Buu saga. The whole Dragon Ball Z story. (Without the movies.) You can play as many different unlockable characters, but you will most likely be stuck using Goku, Gohan, or Piccolo. The game tries to tie in some RPG elements to it, which can affect the gameplay quite a bit. Your character can gain levels, but it's not a huge part of the game. There are a lot of speaking sections, a summary of the story thus far in the DBZ universe.

Dragon Ball Z: Legendary Super Warriors is a fighting game for Game Boy Color. However, it's not the button-mashing fun I was used to. It requires thought, which I found to also be entertaining. Mostly one-on-one matches between well known DBZ characters (with a couple two-on-two matches) it uses a card system. Each character has a deck (you only see your own) and you gain energy each turn in order to use those cards. The goal is to take out your opponent before they take out you.

There are two attack types: Physical and Energy. Even the your position on the battlefield matters in this game. You are more resistant to physical attacks in the air and more resistant to energy attacks on the ground. You gain energy each turn, and each turn you may take an action. Play a card, move, or use a basic punch-kick combo attack which is completed by pressing a combination of buttons in a set time. There are both attack and defense phases. After a couple battles you'll warm up to it. Don't be afraid to shut off the system and restart the battle.

If you see this game for cheap, pick it up and try it. It's a bit old, but it's still good with a fresh gameplay system.
