Animal companion?

Can you have animal companion when you are playing other races than human?

To be more specific: When you choose to play as human, you get the War Dog, as your party member. Can you have it with other races?

P.S. I dont mean pets, like Rangers summons.

**Spoiler Warning**
All Characters have the 'Potential' to get a Mabari War Dog. Human Nobles can get the one in the Kitchen Pantry. Other Origins must speak to Kennel Master in Ostagar and complete his quest(s) then on the way to Lothering you will have a random encounter with Darkspawn chasing your new Pet Dog. Caution, if you do not complete his quest to find the herb in the wilds you will NEVER get the dog as a companion.

i tried that on mage elf and u will have the dog i think all races will have animal ... plus there is the ranger in Rouge they have the ability to summon one wolf ,bear and spider ...
