Studio heads behind Skyrim, Arkham City, Alan Wake, and The Old Republic sound off on the success of Double Fine's Kickstarter project.
Damn, the subtle playa-hatin insinuated in those interviews, disgusting... Bottom line is simple: the ONLY reason why the public is backing up this approach, is Tim Schafer's sincerity and genuineness as a person, and regardless of his gaming background. The same applies to his firm and team as well. Heck, I've played Brutal Legend alone, and though it's not even my type of game, though creative, I'm donating to the project regardless. Just as a token of appreciation of Tim's humble and straight forward nature.
Heck, yes! I became a backer of this project partially because I'm excited for the game, but mostly because I want to make Activision rue the day they decided to screw over Tim Schafer and every single Brutal Legend fan out there...
@001011000101101 Yeah...you get the game when it comes out if you donate 15$. Get your facts straight next time before commenting.
I like how Matias tries to down play the million dollars by saying "it's one thing to get a million it's a different thing to get 50 million". Well many never expected Tim to get even close to a mill and no one expected him to get a mill in one day. Either he is sour grapes or i'm reading into it wrong and he is saying you can't get a game like Skyrim on pure user donations.
this is awesome. where can i fund a game like Shadow Complex with a larger scale and lenght?
Paying for the development of the game, and for the game itself.. why?!
Fk we're mugs in Australia. Everyone goes on about $60 for a full priced game. Here in Oz we pay $89-$99 for PC games and $99-$129 for console games and our dollar is stronger than the US. No wonder piracy is so high. Well done Doublefine you make kickass games and market them at affordable prices keep up the great work.
Doublefine made one of my favourite games.....Iron Brigade(trenched) love your work!!
I'll gladly pay $200 each, for "The Longest Journey" sequel or "Anachronox"... or "Omikron The Nomad Soul"... yea.. It's all sequel though :P
@Subgogo: Did you see that Notch expressed interest in funding Psychonauts 2 on Twitter? I'm quite optimistic about it.
I'm a huge fan of Tim Schafer and his team, and great fan of the Monkey Island series. Having said that, not all Double Fine games have grabbed me. I haven't still tried "Brutal Legend"(so cant commit myself on that), "Psichonauts" I didn't really like, nor "Stacks"... I dont fault the guy for that, it's just they weren't the games for me... So as I'm truly happy for him and this project to come about... I'm not 100% too eager to spend my moneys into this without any knowledge at all about it... If I had at least the impression I would be liking his future game, I'd support it, no doubt... Maybe we can have a sneak-peak of smthg before the March pledge is ended...?
Brutal Legend was awesome.
It's not a new model, but it's becoming a more popular model. The company that's making CARS is using a similar model, and the pay-for-beta exploded after the success of Minecraft.
@Gh05t_ There is a big difference between helping a developer fund a game that they truly want to make and just throwing money at people to bribe them into throwing together/rushing some garbage that they don't even care about.
He's definitely right about one thing - not every game is worth $60!
@Dr_Corndog I hate that too, I never watch videos on here.OT: I don't see this type of strategy working for every developer.
1,5 million dollars and counting! Even though their goal was quite moderate, I doubt any other developer says things like, "Oh, our budget just got four times bigger".
They need to make Psychonauts 2!!!! I loved the first one for all the dialogue and awesome gameplay. I still play that game til this day.
People are giving money because they trust Double Fine, their employees, and they have proof from the past that they can deliver. This is not a blind investment out of generosity or curiosity. It won't turn out this way all the time.
Yes publishes, there are some gamers who happen to be humans...
Holy cow. I bet the developers nearly keeled over. :P
You people want to help devs and play inovative games for kickers? Join Desura. Buy games in alpha state. But bashing bid publishers for being conservative is an exercise of futility for obvious reasons.
Didint this start out for psyconauts 2? Now he changed his mind and insted is doing point and click adventure. Why?
@Tripwolf correction. It's the dragon age 2 team that spat on the customers. The Mass Effect 3 team listened to the fans by A. bringing back the weapon upgrade system from ME1 B. Putting in branching upgrade trees for abilities, and C. putting Kai Leng, a central character from the books into the game as a major character.
people looking at this page. If you want to support developers doing their own thing and taking donations to essentially bypass publishers and give you early versions of the game i.e. (the minecraft sale strategy) Check out Project C.A.R.S. from the guys who made the need for speed shift game. It's a racing sim with some of the best graphics I have ever seen in a game. Also, look at a certain kung fu rabbit game called overgrowth. viva la indie revolucion!
What a brilliant idea! I am a $15 backer now.
@hippiesant I think of hungry kids in America.
point andclick games will always make me smile.
Does anyone know if the game will be 2d or 3d? Gh05t_ Yeah but in those cases it would have to be much more than just 400k.
Kingdom Hearts 3, Beyond Good and Evil 2, Halflife 3!!! Heck, lets get Te Last Guardian finished!!!!!
great developer, shame they aren't more of a commercial success
Look and learn gaming industry, this is what happens when you produce games that MOVE people and entertain rather than try to fleece them every which way possible. Good games, good games developer, happy customers a simple formula if I do say so.
@hippiesanta - And I think of naked women in a jello wrestling ring. What's your point?
I would like to start funding kingdom hearts 3,beyond good and evil 2, psychonauts 2 i can go on....but if only it was that easy.
Does anyone else hate it how you click a link, thinking you're about to read an article, and it takes you to a video instead?
I think of hungry kids in Africa

I think it's incredible how they were able to secure funding in such a short amount of time. I hope that this becomes a trend, because it opens up whole new possibilities. Whenever a good game idea gets shot down, a developer could turn directly to the community, allowing the developer to self-publish their game, and they get 100% of the revenue..
@ AceJakk: Are you bumb? If you payed $15 or more, you get a copy of the full game. So if you backed the game you have already purchased it and will not pay again for it. Can I make this any clearer for you?

Please make another Psychonauts. Please. Pretty Please? Please? C'mon, please?
This is truly a magnificent news. Now, gamers can directly influence the development of a game by funding it entirely, which is something we never could dream of before.
Treat your customers right and they'll treat you right. Take Bioware... constantly spitting on their customers. If they tried this? LOL.
And also I would fund The Witcher 3 get cracking!
I would donate to have Indiana Jones and the fate of atlantis made as an remake or just to make it available on my Ipad without having to use frowned upon methods. There is a ton of old amiga games I would like to see on modern tablets.
