1 Like if you want to be able to play dota, playing pubs and watching pros play ,those are ways to goyou wont' learn much playing with bot DotA community is hostile ,name-calling and arrogantbut listen to what those arrogant had to say,that's only way to learn and grow as a player
1 Like One thing I have been wondering - and I've seen this mentioned a lot - when supporting a carry, you are supposed to let them get all the last hits and only do denies and maybe a bit of harassing.
What I don't get is how you are supposed to gain enough EXP to keep up with everyone else using this strategy.
Also, would it be possible to go into depth about all the various roles, and possible explain some basic tips for strength and intelligent characters (we were told ranged agility are good in mid - or is that just good for all ranged - who would be suited for top and bot?? etc etc).
Thanks for doing these videos. I haven't had chance to play Dota properly yet and a lot of the guides I have read have seemed to be aimed at players with at least some experience and knowledge of the game (even those claiming to be for noobs).
@Scorpion1813 The exp is shared and if u deny the opposing team will get less exp, and carries in a pro game are generally left to solo to get the most farm and exp while supports roam around to help, but you still get a decent amount of exp even if you don't get the last hit, you wouldn't be that far away

1 Like @Scorpion1813 Supports should concentrate on holding lanes, buying wards, courier, smokes, etc... you will get exp and gold by winning ganks.
The lane setup varies, ideally Radiant carry is safe at bot lane. Certain high level pub or clan matches u can see 3 bot 1 mid & top solo, where 2 supports harass the opponents and carry does the farming. Few characters go jungle. There is a lot to learn in DotA, anyways just give it time and you will learn :)

10 Like after 7 years playing Dota and now playing Dota 2 about 800 hours , I have to say Dota 2 is everything Dota players ever wished for . and that's enough to say it's the best game of the genre ... I have to say LoL is a different game from Dota and it's a lot easier to play ... Dota 2 is the real deal , it's that exciting , challenging , rewarding game every gamer ( by that I don't mean those who can't play Max Payne 3 because it's "too hard" :D ) has been waiting for ... if you get good at it , you will enjoy it to the max .
@hatespark1234 thats so exciting! i loved dota for years, and LOL i found to be more a let down. But dota aged a little too much for me in the past 3 years. I cant wait for this game!!

3 Like Ed, you were dead on about one thing: you were not contributing to the fight. However, you have just a few games under your belt against bots, so don't get discouraged. I have played over 650 pub games and know every hero well. Surely, you realize it takes a lot of time and effort...like everything in life. No shortcuts or free rides, son.
i pretty sure ed can play much better,but think he was a bit distracted if you know what i mean hehe.

2 Like I want to join Digeman in saying "Thanks guys for doing these!". I used to be a PC gamer a decade ago, switched to consoles and just got back into PC gaming several months ago. I've never played or seen a MOBA game... got my invite for Dota about a month ago, logged in, tried to play a bot game and had NO IDEA what in the world I was supposed to do so I never bothered logging in again.
These diaries got me to understand the basics and after watching the first two episodes, I did a lot of digging, watching youtube, reading guides and been playing bots for the last few days. Wowie, what an amazing game and I'm just scratching the surface. So thanks Ed and Zorine for doing these because it introduced me to my new favorite game.
2 Like This video was an excellent example of just how hectic a real 5v5 game is, and experiencing the sheer number of things going on at once will get you used to typical gameplay scenarios. Some thoughts/suggestions.
- AA (Ancient Apparition) is not a damage dealer. His usual role is a support, where he picks up healing/mana regen items in order to assist his team. In this role, he should be letting you take last hits/focusing more on denies, since his strengths aren't as dependent on money. His normal skills slow/freeze your opponent, so comboing with drow's ice arrows can stifle an opposing hero's movement speed, thus leading to easy kills.
- Ed could benefit greatly in games by explaining the strengths/weaknesses of the enemy heroes he is lane-ing against. Knowing that Vengeful Spirit has a guaranteed-to-hit stun and a swap will affect his positioning when he's moving around the lane during the first 10-15 minutes.
- Ice Arrow actually has a longer range than Drow?s normal attack (625 vs. 600). Use this to your advantage to harass enemy heroes, especially melee/ones with a shorter range (Example: Vengeful Spirit only has an attack range of 400)
- Get used to knowing the next item you?re going to buy and how much it costs, so you can purchase it as soon as you as you have the money to do so. This is also beneficial in case you die, since you?ll lose less gold if you spend it ahead of time.
- Personally, I feel it?s a poor choice to build Crystalys/Daedalus this early and before completing your boots. Doing more damage and having a critical strike are nice and all, but it?s an expensive item to get that early in the game. Also, critical strikes won?t deal that much more damage earlier on, when your base damage output is lower. Focusing on getting Power Treads or Phase Boots first, would both raise your damage, mobility, and in the case of Power Treads, attack speed or more life. After that, a Manta Style or Shadow Blade can give you some movement speed and survivability. Lastly, consider getting a wand early on. It?s nice to have some HP/Mana regen during fights when you need a small boost to let you live or cast a spell.
- Getting an 1 early level of Silence can be a smart move when you want to get away from enemy heroes or assist your team mates in a fight.

2 Like Buying a TP at lvl 1? With a drow ranger that the only support she can give in the form of top at that point of the game is a slow that is almost not noticeable. Buy more damage and level up aura most of the times at lvl 1 to facilitate last hitting.
1 Like As a gamer that's been playing games for a long time and is looking for new types of games and experiences one might've "missed out" on (never played rts's or dota or t he like either) i just wanna say that i super apreciate this show since (specifically the rts genre) is a pretty tough genre to get into. Definitely gonna check out DOTA 2 now cuz of this show! =D

And if you want to check DOTA 2 better start with another MOBA so you can get the basics until it comes out
@Darnasian You don't say? o.O (note the sarcasm) I don't really understand what acronym MOBA's supposed to stand for but i'm guessing it's the LoL and Dota genre of games.
I agree that playing similar type of games would kindof teach me the basics of the genre but that would be way more timeconsuming than someone experienced actually explaining why and how you should play, not to mention small things like (last hit killing and the sort) would never have been something a n00b would think about unless someone actually mentioned it's a good tactic.
Aaaand, me mentioning that they should also do a guide like this for starcraft (since rts games are infamous for beeing hard for n00bs) doesn't in any way mean that DOTA 2 is an rts :P
And finally, not to be all in your face or anything, (note the sarcasm again), but even though Dota per say might not specifically be an rts, if you know anything about the genre, you should also know know that Dota indeed stems from a little rts game known as Warcraft 3.
@Darnasian Hm, I never got that from your comments. Nothing wrong at all with playing the original DotA, of course, although for someone who's never played I think the WC3 interface is a much bigger barrier to entry, probably easier to pick up dota 2 for a modern gamer unless he happened to play a lot of old RTS games.
@Darnasian Man, you're nasty. Dota 2 is going free to play, there are already a huge amount of people in the beta who have never played before, probably quite a few have never even played an RTS. Solo queuing as a new player is the same experience as solo queuing for LoL or HoN, the only advantage to those games, as I stated above, would be their more robust tutorials, a feature that Valve is planning to implement very soon (probably next on the list after TI2.) It is in no way "essential" to start on a different game, and if he spends too long playing LoL specifically, it will start to be more of a hindrance then a help to playing DotA well.

One question for you: DOTA 2 is unlike LOL and HON...there are no lvls and no rankings besides ranked games , how would it be if suddenly everyone that never jumped into a MOBA started playing this and they freaking suck
I'm not saying this guy sucks or anything...he might fking be new fNatic or navi player to the rooster , but it's fking annoying when the game is flooded with newbs...yes I said newbs not noobs
@Digeman Don't listen to Darnasian, if you can get a Dota 2 invite jump right in. LoL has a tutorial, that's literally the only reason it might be worthwhile to dip in to first. But if you spend a couple months playing LoL, you'll grasp some of the basics but form a plethora of bad habits on top of that. You've watched these videos, you should be able to just jump in to Dota 2 practice games.

RTSs are not hard for noobs at least not against the A.I. and the campaign but in e-sports yes

You need practice not just knowing the existence of it

Not so easy now is it? Like I said you need a little bit of practice and not for the last hit part because it's not hard to calculate when to strike but the part where you are close enough to grab the farm
And finally DotA was a custom mode made by the fans of Warcraft 3...a game where I competed in numerous Blizzard contests and Warcraft 3 is no little RTS....Game of the Year in 2002 on numerous gaming web sites and the third most played RTS in Asia
