It's the gameplay. So exhilarating, so smooth, and so much bleeping fun. The weapons are fantastic, the character progression is beautifully paced, the maps are creative and complex, the graphics are first-rate, and the action is challenging but fair and utterly satisfying. Within a few hours you transform from prisoner and prey to an unstoppable monster blowing the crap out of everything. The story is ridiculous and the characters (just the marine, Stephen, and Olivia) aren't that interesting, but the bosses, environments, and level designs are uniformly excellent. It's does Doom as well as Doom can be done, and that's pretty awesome. It's just so damn fun.
