I played the Playstation version of Doom before I ever found out about the PC version of Doom. I played this when I was what, 4, 5 years old?
As you know, the PS version of Doom has different sound effects and music than PC Doom. The PS sound effects as a kid sounded extremely creepy. The sounds of doors opening and closing (whether it be slow or fast), the teleporting sound, the lift sound, and heck, the item pickup sound.
Now, the monsters. Sure, they have the same sprites as they did from PC version, but the sound effects made them really scary. Like that growling sound you hear when Demons and other large monsters are roaming around the map. As a kid, I always thought the growling sound the Imp made was "I'm gonna get him." The Arachnotron walking sound effects are much more creepier than PC Doom. And worst of all, the Cyberdemon walking sound effect kept me up at night in PS Doom/Doom 64 (this is moreso true in Doom 64 than PS Doom, because the Cyberdemon looks much more scarier in Doom 64).
The weapon sound effects were memorable to me as a kid. Every weapon firing sound was great. And I always got a thrill down my spine firing the BFG in PS Doom as a little kid. Wow. Heck, when I was little, I thought the BFG was a robot with eyes and teeth (those two red dots and the white thing below in the middle).
Man, I really owe a lot to PS Doom. Sound effects really can amp up a game.

Holy crap its peach freak! :O Where'd you go!?
Anywho, I completely agree actually. I prefer the PS1 version of Doom over the PC version simply for the soundtrack and new sounds. From time to time I do get a jump kind of scare when I forget there is a monster behind a door and it springs open to me getting mauled in the face by something. The Cyberdemon noise is probably my favorite part. Nothing beats running around Tower of Babel hearing the thumping noises, while peaking around each corner looking for it.
Personally I find the PS1 version of Doom on the rarer side. Of course I can get a copy online just fine, but with shipping and what prices people charge it comes out to be a bit pricey. I just recently found another copy in a local game store here that sells retro games. I found both Doom and Final Doom there. I had to nab up both of them. The day my discs are ruined (Not likely, but with rarer games I panic and treat them like babies), is going to be a sad day for me, so its nice having back ups.

i am doing a runthrough of PS doom. It has very good playability so i am enjoying it. map design is good for doom 1.. and so far has been good for doom 2 (of which i have only completed 2 or 3 levels so far).

Agreed. The PS1 port of Doom is my favourite version. I love the new lighting effects and sound effects and music. It makes the experience a lot more creepy.
They cut a few things out, but you get most of Ultimate Doom, and most of Doom II thrown in as well.

Agree with everything stated thus far, Doom on the PSX was my first experience with Doom and one of my earliest experiences with the FPS genre as far back as I can recall. My buddy way back in elementary school had Doom on his Playstation (funny story, I ended up with his copy since I borrowed it for the longest time and when we stopped hanging out one day we both just forgot about it until I found it sitting there in my dresser years later). I really wish I had it up here at my new place, it's still in that dresser in my old home.
I remember endless late nights of staying up playing Doom and feeling like I was in the game, hearing every growl and every low note being played in the background, as if it was spelling DOOM instrumentally. I was so scared running through those halls with a chainsaw mowing down pinky demons, but it was so much fun that I got such an adrenaline rush! You can imagine how disappointed I was with the chainsaw by the time I played the PC version since you weren't always invincible to certain enemies, but that's besides the point. PSX Doom will forever be one of the greatest ports for a game ever. I never really got into Doom II on it since I never finished the original game on PSX, but now I REALLY wanna give both games a try since I've beaten PC Doom countless times now and on XBLA. I'd also like to see how Doom II fares with ominous music since that game has some pretty high adrenaline levels compared to the first Doom. Oh yeah and while I'm at it I think I'll plunder the internetz for a copy of Doom 64- aka the scariest Doom game ever made.

Ninja Gaiden is quite possibly the greatest game ever to be brought back"
