- Jan 7, 2012 1:15 am GMTWe all have fond memories of playing Doom, but what about our not so fond memories of playing levels that make you hate everything?
Way back when, I absolutely hated map28, The Spirit World. Multiple Arch-viles, a fun little Revenant trap, and the rock and a hard place you get put in when you first enter the room with the Spider Mastermind.
My next hated level had to be map16, The Suburbs. You start in a dangerous situation, and the only way out leads to Revenants and an Arch-vile out in the open. The Revenants guarding the red key also gave me so much trouble.
In third place was map10, Refueling Base. Almost no ammo to start with, hitscan enemies everywhere, and a key guarded by more of my, at the time, (not) favorite enemy, the Revenant. Of course, to top it all off was a teleporting Cyberdemon at the exit.
Amazing how bad I was up until a few years ago. Now I can complete a UV max of all three of these in my sleep (I still suck, though).
Now, I'd say my least favorite level is map19 The Citadel. Not nearly enough action, and I always forget what teleporters to take to get the red and blue keys when going for a max run.

I don't know what is about this map, but I find it largely unenjoyable. It's not hard at all, it's just somewhat dull. Must be something to do with that stupid use of a large damagesector outside too. The one ****ing place you have to cross several times, and it's a damagesector.
MAP19: The Citadel
I can't explain my dislike for this level. It's really not bad, I just don't like it all that much.
MAP22: The Catacombs
This one's just absolute **** for design when it comes to Pistol-Starting. Way too many Chaingunners on and around the central platform, it's close to pure luck if you can avoid taking any serious damage here. Not to mention the Spectres taking all your fire due to Autoaim's priority sorting being pure crap.

MAP19: The Citadel
I'd say it's the never ending supply of spectres, imps, and demons, and pretty much nothing else. The level is nothing but mindless slaughter of rooms of these enemies.
MAP22: The Catacombs
For the most part, I agree, but you can run through the level and take minimal damage if you do the right things. Namely, never use the teleporter behind the plasma rifle until everything up top is dead.

http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=7&topic=53203289 - Jan 7, 2012 10:15 pm GMTHeh, you actually listed three of my favorite maps. For MAP16, even though the buildings don't look realistic at all, I think it's one of the best maps at capturing the environment of decay that's supposed to be prevalent in the game. That huge mass of enemies that teleports in after the blue key is a lot of fun to handle, too. MAP10 has always been a fun challenge to me in part because of the scarce ammo, but it isn't much to look at. MAP28 is one of my favorite levels in its appearance. I normally complain about a map having too much invulnerability, but if you time everything right you have invulnerability spheres for pretty much every major battle in the map. Everything else is generally pretty fun, too.
I'll agree that MAP19 is pretty dull, but I still kind of like it for some reason. It must just be the architecture and premise. MAP17 has annoying damagesectors and not a lot else, so I agree that it's in the bottom tier. I don't mind MAP22 too much because of how short it is, but it's another bottom tier map.
I've always been in the minority on this, but I don't like MAP08: Tricks and Traps very much. I've always thought it looked like an ugly map strung together with gimmicks. Starting in a central "hub" with multiple doors opening to paths radiating out has always been one of my least favorite map styles.

Essy, Avian Enthusiast - Jan 8, 2012 2:05 pm GMTI never liked the layout of the Suburbs map but playing on ultraviolence with monster respawn enabled and cheating it was always kinda fun. There's a bit of a glitch in that map though with respawn enabled. It's possible to get the monsters to spawn outside the map somehow. Actually it's possible to give the monsters what seems to basically be noclipping abilities. I don't know how that happened. (I haven't managed it on GZDoom or Skulltag but I managed it years ago on the original versions and Doom95.)

Ah, so that's what it was. It was a fun bug at least. That map was one of my favorites purely for that bug actually. The same can happen on Icon of Sin except they don't noclip, they just manage to spawn outside the level. That one will happen if you play Icon of Sin long enough. (I've turned on god mode and left the game running for 8 hours while I went and did something else before.)

For who could ever...? - Feb 7, 2012 7:17 am GMT
The bonus levels were actually very boring. I think they could have done something cooler outside of the Wolfenstein and Comander Keen references therein.

Also Slough Of Despair from Doom 1.
The one map in the entire game that can be bugged and unwinnable if you don't play a specific area in/at exactly the order/speed the designer intended. It locks up with you stuck inside if you're too efficient.

DOOMBEARS II - Return to the Labyrinth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWdejK6yKiQ - Feb 14, 2012 11:38 am GMTI'd have to say the Suburbs as well. Had to have spent a couple of hours on that, before eventually cheating.

I like big stages but Industrial Zone feels very long and some bits on it feels tedious. Nirvana feels way too bland for my taste.

Yeah, it's easy as s***. And the first time I played it I ended up killing all the enemies, wondering around aimlessly with 200 health, and then got smashed by the compressing ceiling in that one room.

In the before time, the long long ago... - Mar 22, 2012 8:39 pm GMTCitadel: Same reasons. A lot of scrounging around with no enemies left to kill.

DOOMBEARS II - Return to the Labyrinth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWdejK6yKiQ - Apr 4, 2012 1:16 am GMTI used to hate it more than any other, but after playing through it some more, I think the only truly awful thing about The Chasm is the room with the winding passage and Lost Souls because of how you're dead if you fall. One thing that of course negates this a little (if I'm remembering correctly) is how there's an invulnerability sphere you can take into there as you just chaingun most of the Lost Souls away. The narrow ledges in general suck, but with some practice they aren't that big of a deal. Even considering the risk of falling, the level isn't extremely difficult thanks to the load of health you have. I also think the map looks nicer than many of the others in Doom II.
Many of the secrets are also nicely conceived.

the only bad part of The Chasm is the whole having to cross narrow ledges aspect.
