How come Doom 3 and Resurrection (PC) keep returning to the Windows desktop?

How come Doom 3 and Resurrection (PC) keep returning to the Windows desktop level in Windows Vista 64-bit? I checked the "Ease of Access" control panel but all items are UNchecked.
