*After a few lives finally get to near the end of the level with both kongs*

*uses TNT guy to blow up a zinger*

*goes into barrel which blasts the kongs into a red zinger*

*sees the end of level goal*

    Me: Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.....................?

    *dies to the bees*

    Me: *sigh*

This is the first level by the way.

Np. I'm looking forward to the many deaths in later levels.

Sweet. I haven't seen many full DKC 2 hacks before. Well, I guess I have, but the only ones I've seen are insanely hard and just painful to play. But yours actually looks reasonable, although it certainly looks hard in some places. That DK coin at the end of that video looks like a pain to get.
I'll definitely play this when I get the chance. Is it completely done yet or is this just a demo of a few levels or something?

It looks like it's version 2.0 so probably a full hack. The map is unchanged and parts of levels as well. It took me a few dozen lives to get to the first save point (not using save states or 50 life code). Memory of the level is your best bet to dodging some things as well as making blind jumps.

The level design is not kaizo but may feel cheap at times. Be prepared to switch kongs to suit the different sections of a level. I think it's pretty good so far.

Thank you. Yeah, my goal was to make it as challenging as possible without requiring the use of tool assisting. Maybe a handful of save-states could help, but nothing outrageous like 1/4th slowdown and save-state every other second.

"That DK coin at the end of that video looks like a pain to get."

It's definitely scary, but I'll PM you a hint about that part if you want.

Thanks! It is completely done. Even Stronghold Showdown has been modified.

    Thank you ansujitsu !

    Sort of.

When I played Unreal Tournament 2004 online, Rocket was short handed to Rox.

Hah, I've done more non-TAS speedruns of the original DKC2 than I can count, one of the few games I know by heart. This should be a fun experience! Mind if I record & upload my playthrough (with due credits of course)?

I'll be waiting for a video of you beating 2-2. I can't beat it in conjunction with 2-1. stupid mistakes in 2-1 I shouldn't be making which lead me to lose a few lives. I can't be bothered farming 20 plus lives so I only have Swanky's bonus area to get more.

Lots of precise timings in 2-2 such as that damn cannonball shooting in your face after you get blasted up onto the platform. I guess I'll beat it eventually.

Eeeeeh, I thought everyone used Life cheats. The point is not lives, it's to finish the damn levels.

I'm having a hard time without Save States, so might just end up using them. :p

Oh, btw, i have videos of all the levels being beaten. They aren't "speedruns" though, just simply beating each level. I also ignore any hidden DK Coins. After a while, I also start to ignore the KONG letters (Although there is a level where ignoring the KONG letters is actually a wise decision. HINT: The only level where the KONG levels are still in their original locations).

If you can save state what's the point? I think it's better to beat it on your own. You'll feel much better than when using save states.
  • Mar 16, 2012 2:50 pm GMT
Honestly, when I was making this hack, I thought to myself, If they CAN use save state, then there's nothing I can do to stop them. There's not toooo many parts that require it, I've tested all the levels and beaten them all at least once without save state, but I admit that the task was pretty daunting.

If there is a point where you find yourself repeatedly dying, and you just want to save time getting to that point, then I can understand the use of save state. Now, the combination of save state and slow down, THAT I can recognize as being a cheap playing method. Those Kaizo Mario hacks are damn near unplayable without slowdown, and that I feel is the major difference between those hacks and mine. In my hacks, you'll likely need save states to help you, but you should never need slowdown.

Did you use some kind of a DKC2 editor to make this game or did you do it all using a hex editor or what? I ask because I'd be interested in making a hack of this game, but the only editors I can find are in Japanese and/or bugged in some way.
