Donkey Kong enters a new dimension

User Rating: 9 | Donkey Kong 64 N64
Donkey Kong already started his career in the third dimension with the highly successful Donkey Kong Country trilogy. With the release of the N64 came Donkey Kong 64. The game compares to two other big-name N64 games, Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie, but all 3 of these games are great. For this game, it's what you expect from this franchise. It may not be the same as Country, but it's a well done game.

Donkey Kong 64 continues the battle between Donkey Kong and King K.Rool. In this game, K.Rool plans to destroy the Kongs by using a laser to destroy DK island. However, while on the way to the island, K.Rool's mechanical island crashes, causing the device to break. So, to delay DK from stopping him, K.Rool kidnaps his fellow Kongs and steals his golden banana hoard. It's up to DK to rescue his Kongs and get his bananas back.

The game allows you to play as up to 5 Kongs. DK is the main fighter, who can become invincible and use barrel cannons to blast around. DK's nephew Diddy can fly around in his jetpacks and charge into enemies. Dixie Kong's sister Tiny can float around in the air using his pigtails and can shrink down to reach places the other Kongs can't. Lanky Kong can move around by doing a handstand and can inflate himself to fly around. Chunky Kong is the strongest, but is slow and the weakest jumper. To assist you in the game are various weapons, like guns and musical instruments that can kill enemies with shockwaves.

The single player mode is the main part of the game, and rightfully so as every level of the game is very unique in design. The Multiplayer mode is also pretty fun as you go around trying to 'kill' your opponents with your guns.

My issue with the game is its graphics. They're not bad, even as it is the Nintendo 64. They're well done, but they are kind of creepy at times and might scare younger kids. Heck, they still creep me out sometimes.

All in all, despite the weird graphics, this is a great game, and will always stick out as a classic in my mind.
