Disney Does Donald

User Rating: 7 | The Lucky Dime Caper starring Donald Duck SMS

The Lucky Dime Caper is a platformer on the Sega Master System, and was made during an era when Disney platforming games were really some of the highest quality games out there (like Ducktales on the NES or the Illusion series on the Sega consoles). So, expectations for me were pretty high here. On a positive note, the game looks amazing, with fun animations, diverse environments, and storytelling scenes. It also tries some different things, like letting you use different weapons (imagine being a mad mallard swinging your trusty mallet around).

However, there are some noticeable detracting factors as well. Probably the most important detractor are the controls, which are critical to any good platformer. Here, Donald feels sluggish so you don't feel like you have precise control of the duck. Also, the weapons in the game are a neat gimmick, with a melee weapon and a ranged weapon. However, the game balancing doesn't work well when considering them. Some of the boss fights are laughable with the right weapon, but can become challenging, or even frustrating without one (or without the "right" one). Overall, there are good points and flaws with this game. The flaws don't work to totally ruin the experience, but they do keep The Lucky Dime Caper from being as great as it could have been.
