A great satire on the gaming industry

User Rating: 6 | DLC Quest PC

DLC Quest isn’t something I’d call a game, but more of a parody or satire of a game. Sure, it’s playable and enjoyable, but the writing and design of it all are meant to take a pot shot at the new menace of gaming today, DLC. With the uprise of technology and greed, who says that such a thing like DLC Quest won’t happen? Sure, it’s a crazy hyperbole to when DLC goes rampant and kills all, save the chimpanzees and cheetahs, but it’s something to look at and laugh at before it could actually happen. And considering Capcom’s affairs with Asura’s Wrath and Street Fighter X Tekken, well, maybe a game exactly like DLC Quest really isn’t too far off.

Aside from the one time joke constantly being played for laughs throughout the game, the core of the game is basic with simple platforming and collecting coins to get more DLC so you can become an overpowered juggernaut that can go through the game easily. While the first part of the game, DLC quest is very bare bones, and meant more as a joke than a game, the sequel, Live Freemium or Die is a different beast. Much of the Freemium actually has a basic story to it as well as taking more shots at the gaming industries more illogical game designs such as fetch quests and basic politics of who should be chief. What makes the “sequel” better than the first part of DLC quest though, is that it pretty much has its prequel’s gameplay mechanic, but it fiddles around with it to make it better. The way you kill both bosses in the game involve collecting money, and the whole game is about collecting money to advance so it really feels like they got the whole collectable thing down. Really though DLC quest is just a delightful look and satire of the gaming industry.

Final Thoughts:

DLC quest isn’t what I call a game, but a parody or satire of one. While the joke of having to collect money to unlock abilities wears out after awhile; the game eventually expands its pot shots to the gaming industry itself. I won’t call DLC Quest a good game pre say, but its certainly is a great joke and satire.
