Simply the best RPG ever

User Rating: 10 | Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga X360

Even though Divinity 2: Dragon Knight Saga has been out for a while, I only recently got my hands on it. Having never played any of the previous games, I had no idea what to expect.

Now, after roughly 50 hrs of playing, I can only say that this is the Best game I have ever played, easily! (and I have been playing games for 20+ years. Mostly action RPG).

My previous top two were Fable: Lost chapters and Skyrim. Fable had tons of charm, unusual and interesting quests and all characters have bags of personality, but lacked Open worldness and was too easy. Skyrim was more or less the opposite. It had a huge open worldness, but lacked personality and many of the quests were very bland and tedious. Also, after some grinding, the enemies were easy here too. Divinity 2 (which came out in the middle of these two) has it all (it isn’t strictly open world, but some of the areas are very large in their own right and still quite open)! Here’s a breakdown of my opinion of the parts that make up this great game:

1. Great character personality, with accents from all over the British Isles. I Caught cockney, Welsh, Scottish, Cornish and everything in between!

2. Humour! Tons of great humour (some of it quite adult). I laughed out loud on many occasions.

3. Fantastic balance of enemy difficulty: which continues throughout the game. Never too hard, but sometimes quite challenging. You do die every now and then, but usually because you were not quite ready to be there yet. Close to the end it does come a bit easy, but feels rewarding for that same reason.

4. Controls: Great controls. Fluid motion, no lag, decent hit detection and the ability to occasionally change into a dragon in mid leap (only applicable for one part of the game, but fun anyway). In my 50 hr game I didn’t encounter one single technical problem (though the game froze twice for my girlfriend).

5. Story: Fairly decent. There is plenty of Lore if you want to read it (optional), but it doesn’t clog the game (like Elder scrolls has a tendency to).

6. Puzzles: This was one of my favourite things about this game. There’s a whole boatload of mysteries, but you mainly have to discover them yourself. The game does not lead you by the hand (Like Fable tends to do).

7. Weapons & Armour: A good supply of these which get progressively better as you advance. There is the possibility to both charm and enchant items too.

8. Extras: Here are a couple things that added to the enjoyability

a. Mindread – Very handy to tell if NPCs are lying or have secrets

b. Battle tower – A place with your very own Necromancer, trainer, runners, blacksmith and alchemist

c. Appearance – Change appearance or even sex at any time

d. Make your own monster out of dead body parts (which acts as a familiar until it loses too much health)

9. Replay: I have not quite finished the game yet, but am already looking forward to replaying. I missed several quests on the first run through and now have a better idea of how they may be carried out.

So, to cap off. Get ready for a long, addictive, rewarding and fun game (Including, thespian ghosts, talking vegetables, mad hermits, zombies with a lisp, arrogant alchemists, con men and a pig called Kevin).

Try putting that controller down...i dare you.....
