Don't expect too much fun from a game that's based on the movie which can be a short game with frustrating moments

I was one of those gamers that never really had the chance to play this game back when the film was released or when everyone else you knew had a PS1 and would talk about this game or the movie. After playing the during one afternoon I can see why it's one of those games that you either love it or hate it when it comes to Disney games for the PlayStation.

Based on the movie which was released back in 1997 you play as Hercules as he battles through a series of action-packed levels in order to prove himself a true hero on earth and take his rightful place as a god on Mount Olympus and of course stop Hades from his evil plan.

This is a 2D side-scroll platformer with a few 3D elements added in; each of the levels you'll play through will be based from the movie itself. At each of the levels you're required to get to the end of the level and collecting some coins and the letters Hercules in each of the levels to unlock some features and of course be able to save the game. This can become annoying if you get frustrated on the odd levels you'll come across or certain enemies or bosses can really block your way.

Using Square to use your sword, Circle to punch or holding down Triangle to pull off a powerful punch attack. By pressing the X button it can feel a little sloppy trying to jump or jumping from a long or short range distance making it feel that you're hovering for a short moment. You do get to use other Greek weapons for your sword like a fire sword or lighting strike or even shockwave blast. Not all levels are side-scrollers you'll come to a few levels when everything is in 3rd-person mode when it comes to running towards something in front you but going forwards all the way and using the directional pad to move or holding the down button to run slower. This can be a little annoying and frustrating when obstacles can get in the way, and looking for Herculade drinks to restore your health which can pop up at any time in any of the levels. However the boss battles are likely be the best part about the game with some good 3D visuals and effects just like in the movie especially the Hydra fight.

I do like the 2D art layout for Hercules it does remind you how good 2D platformers are when it comes to fifth generation when it comes to games. If you've seen the movie you'll be happy that they've kept most voice actors from the film into the game. And the soundtrack makes a good touch too but however as I already mention you would need to collect half the stuff that's in each of the levels in order to save. But there are cheat codes for it if you want to get to a level where you last died and you don't have a memory card. Do note that you can now actually download this from the PlayStation Store if you have a PS3 or PSP.

I wouldn't say that's worth the purchase it all but would suggest either renting the game first or at least wait til it come on special offer on PSN if you don't want to feel ripped off on how short this game is which can easily take at least 5 hours or less.
