Is there a non lethal way to get rid of Tall Boys?

I've ran into Tall Boys for the first time, and I try to kill as few people as possible. Yet I can't seem to find a way to get rid of them without killing them, since even taking their oil container down (the blue thing they have on their back) seems to do nothing except raising their alert level. On top of that, even the sleep darts seems to be uneffective. Did anyone found a good way to take them down in a non lethal way?

No there's not. It's best just to avoid them all together.

There isn't, but there literally are only like four or five tall boys in the entire game, and they are pretty easy to avoid altogether.

The only challenging tall boys are in the lady boyle mission, and that's if you are going the no power route.

Has anyone tried knocking out ALL THREE whale oil tanks with a crossbow?
This doesn't cause them to explode like a pistol does, but I am not sure if it kills them or not. They just kind of fall over. No blood or anything. I can't find any forums that specify this method.
Someone else want to try and see what happens? I'm pretty sure I heard snoring, but it could've been a nearby guard....
