Personally, I think this game is one of the most fun games I've played in a while. I've sunk over 150 hours into this game, and I'm still fiddling and experimenting and finding new things. I've heard some detract from Disgaea because of it's 2-D graphics, but I think that that's a part of it's charm. Disgaea isn't supposed to be a graphical masterpiece, (although some of the characters look ridiculously cute), it's supposed to be an incredibly deep strategy-RPG, and in that respect it succeeds completely. Due to the complete freedom to customize your characters, capture enemies, tweak your stats, and strengthen your items, as well as the new game plus feature, Disgaea has an almost infinite replay value. My only real complaint is that the english voice-acting wavers between really funny and really bad, but the music and sound effects are very good, so that offsets that deficit ("Invasion from Within" currently reigns as one of my top 5 favorite video game songs). There is also an incredibly steep jump in difficulty when veering from the path of the main storyline and attempting to complete some of the side-quests, but some of the features built into the game, namely the ability to combine two enemies on the screen into a single enemy with a level that is the sum of the previous two, and the ability to capture said enemy, make it both possible and interesting to conquer the highest reaches of the game. All in all, even if you have never played a strategy-type RPG before, (and before Disgaea, I myself hadn't), I highly suggest you try this game. Even if the graphics put you off at first, I urge you to stick with it, and not judge the game based on that alone. The gameplay's simple enough for a beginner to get the hang of, especially with the tutorial, and the game only gets funnier as you get further into it. So, dig in, have fun, and try not to blow up too many penguins (you'll see what I mean when you play).
At times, the video game era we're currently in can be tough on some of the more dedicated gamers. Small developers used to tune a game towards a small subset of a genre's fans, but since the production costs were so lo... Read Full Review
