{Disgaea Hour of Darkness} for the Playstation 2
(1.)--Gameplay: Disgaea is a turn based strategy game that puts the player in the shoes of Laharl, a demon prince of the netherworld in his quest to become the overlord. Along the way, the player meets a comical set of characters to help them along the journey. Right of the bat, Disgaea offers the player a short tutorial on how to play the game. However, this short tutorial drops so much information in so little time it is a wake-up call for gamers who are used to linear gameplay . Players who take the time to understand the basics of the game will soon open up an almost infinite amount of possibilites to play. Disgaea not only offers the player the ability to upgrade the characters but also their weapons and even their enemies! Upgrading characters is as simple as killing a bunch of enemies, but if you want to level-up quicker you can pass a bill to add tougher enemies in your path. Passing bills require you to go to the Dark Assembly, where you can pass bills that will change the pace of the game if successful. You see, in order to pass bills you have to present it to a number of senators and they will vote whether or not it will be passed. In most cases they will veto the bill , however you are given the option to bribe high-leveled senators whose influence can change the outcome of the vote. On the other hand, upgrading weapons requires you to enter the weapon itself and defeat the monsters holding the weapon back from its potential. Long story short, Disgaea presents so much creative and addictive gameplay that you have to play it to see why this game is fun even in today.
(2.)--Graphics: If you are a fan of anime, most likely you will appreciate the artwork in Disgaea. The game mixes both 2D and 3D graphics which is both a positive and negative. Overall, the game doesn't offer the most stunning graphics out there but it is the gameplay that makes this game great.
(3.)--Difficulty: After the first boss battle, you will soon find out that speeding through the game in your first playthrough is near impossible. The difficulty varies depending on how much time you spend maintaining your characters and their weapons. Obviously, trying to fight a level 20 enemy with a level 3 character will make your game a living nightmare.
(4.)--Replay Value: Right after you beat the game, you can replay the game with your level and weapons retained. That being said, you are free to run through copious amounts of enemies with little difficulty. Even though you have finished the main storyline, you can pass a bill in the Dark Assembly that will open up new worlds that will provide even more challenges. The addictive gameplay, quirky cast, and memorable storyline will keep you coming back for years to come.
*Another reason why all Playstation 3's need to be backwards compatible, Disgaea Hour of Darkness gets a 9.5
