"Resident Evil with dinosaurs" is not necisarally a bad thing.

I never used to own a PS1 so I never played any of the Resident Evil games for the console or any game in the series for that matter. Despite this I can instantly feel the Resident Evil vibe coming off of Dino Crisis. But since Capcom made both Resident Evil and Dino Crisis I guess we can forgive the similarities. Dino Crisis does well enough on its own to have its own identity while still felling safe and familiar to RE fans out there. The game has you playing as Regina, a member of an elite commando group called SORT. Regina and her team have been sent to recon Ibis Island to recon a research facility that is heading a secret weapons project. The one big difference is of course that you fight dinosaurs not zombies. In that regard the dinosaurs you fight in this game are much faster, and more cunning than a bunch of limping corpses. Swift raptors and flying pteranodons will always keep you on your toes, wondering where the next attack will come next. The camera view, limited ammo, exploring environments to find ways to progress, nearly everything else in the game was taken right from the RE series. While for the most part that is not a bad thing there are still some lingering issues. The camera does not always do a good job of catching the action, meaning that by the time you notice a raptor is bearing down on you it can already be too late(those pteranodons are the biggest offenders in this regard). Controlling your character can also take some getting used to which can make aiming difficult at times. This can at times lead to some cheap deaths. The game is also quite slow especially by today's standards. The graphics are quite nice for a late PS1 era game though there are better looking PS1 games out there. The game should take anyone somewhere between 10 to 20 hours to finish on there first play through. While clearly made from the RE mold this game is good enough that just about anyone with a little patience can look past some nagging flaws and have a good time.
