Extremely fun and addicting

User Rating: 9.2 | Diddy Kong Racing N64
Diddy Kong Racing is an addicting racing game that is worth at least a rental. You are given a number of characters to start with, each with their own sets of pros and cons. The characters that are easy to control are fast of the zippers (boosts) but are slow when in regular speeds. The characters that are more difficult to control may be slower of the zippers, but have a higher top speed when in regular motion. There are a good number of tracks as well that are unlocked as you go through the adventure mode. Adventure mode is gratifying in that you unlock almost each and every track on you own, or with a friend with a code, and the tracks and worlds that they are a part of are unique unto themselves. There are some great unlockables too. When you have finished the regular story line, there are multiple additions that you may not know right away; they are quite the pleasant surprise. The actual gameplay is very satisfying as well. The artificial intelligence may be easy for veterans, but as a child it put up a good challenge. In the game you may pick up different powerups that reange from missiles to shield to oil; all of which may be upgraded twice to make each more powerful. This adds a good strategic element in that you have to decide to whether to upgrade your current powerup or choose a different one; mix it up or power it up. This game has amazing lasting appeal. It had easily lasted me over a hundred hours of playing time. It is a party game is every right, with four skilled players and all of the traks unlocked as well as all the characters unlocked, a good challenge can be found. However a downside is that if three or more players are playing at any one time, there would be no computer controlled opponents, so if you are significantly better than your opponents then you would spend lots of time ahead of the pack. But if you have friends that are in the same skill level as you, you will not miss the computer opponents. I highly recommend this game to anyone who has not played it, but because of the simple AI, you should rent it first. in the age of the xbox 360, wii, and playstation 3 i will still come back to this game for a taste of nostalgia. If you want a great party game and you have skilled friends that you can play against, run and get this game ASAP!
