The thing to note is that it took him 400+ hours on his barb to get there. Whereas using the AH, he could get there in well under half that time. So yes, you don't have to use the AH to beat this game. But it'll take you over twice as long to get to the same place.

I played all the way to 60 on my barb before I used the AH. I even had MP up to 4 by the time I hit lvl 60.
So you don't "need" to use the AH to run MP lvl games.

I'm a self found player as well. Only AH trading I've done is sell a few items here and there.
Sitting at about 230 hours with my witch doc.
It's a pain sometimes as the game always feels hard, but every item is a possible upgrade which keeps me going.

Now, try taking your lvl 60 Barb to MP4 Inferno with your self found gear and tell me how many minutes you last.

So what you had to trade in d2 to get good gear. You can find awesome loot that you just can't use, that's what the AH is for. When I find something good, I think well if I can't use it at least it's money towards something I can use.
I don't get what this topic is about? Using the AH is a good thing not a bad thing.
