- May 31, 2012 6:37 pm GMTI got the Asus ROG and I love it. $1,300 and it plays all the games I love and looks and sounds great. I thought about going with AW but I could not justify getting a computer for that price. If I had the funds I would have gone that route.

Yeah like I said I have no arguments to this.
The only thing is that it probably also depends on whether a person has a set of criteria he has to adhere to. Like in my case I wanted something I can carry in my backpack everyday to work, treat it as a work computer and when I get back home, double as a decent gaming rig. So knowing that, I had to get the smallest sized computer with the most decent specs for that size. At that time only AW was offering such a model.
If I had the space at home I would love building my own PC, for probably 50% cheaper.
Personally, I'd rather take the hit in graphics just for the convenience of being able to play a laptop anywhere in my house. Towers aren't exactly "convenient" to be played anywhere in the house.
Contrary to popular belief, even on a budget laptop with an Intel HD graphics 3000, you won't be stuck on lowest settings at 15 FPS. Maybe I'm just used to playing on lower end systems, but I don't mind playing on that. Medium still looks great on most games.
^ Tried running D3 on my laptop with an i5-2430M, 6GB of RAM, and a Intel HD3000. I can run it with medium settings at a consistent 40-45 fps if I set the laptop to high performance. The machine runs super cool, so it is great to play on the road. - May 31, 2012 6:38 pm GMTVioletZer0 posted...

Just so's. I did build mine. I'm just saying if I really really wanted it, I would totally pay for a Falcon Northwest machine all logo and FALCON SCREAM'd out.
Amongst enthusiasts, sure Alienware machines are bloated and so on, but how many more people don't know or simply don't care. Having the disposable income and the convenience is a big factor for oodles of people.
Go to our PC board and say "I want a gaming laptop for X dollars, what's the best deal I can get?" (Also, be sure to mention that you want a laptop. There's a subset of PC nerds out there who believe that only desktops are for gaming and you should just buy individual components and build one yourself.)
Track the thread and come back in an hour. People who DO have that kind of expendable time will be happy to help others.
Yes, but my point was that how many of the more mainstream minded people are generally aware that there are people out there willing to help? On top of that, who would a more average user looking to dive in to getting a gaming rig go to? Some guys on a forum that they may or may not even be aware of or a company apparently known for building dependable machines? Remember, the mindset is likely not going to be in sync with say.. people on the PC board. - May 31, 2012 6:38 pm GMTFlipManV3 posted...

People are not hating because they are poor.- Most people who build PCs are pretty well off.
People are not hating because they are jelly- most people here probably built their PC and it's probably better than most Alienware.
People are hating because it is fun to make fun of people who make bad choices.
Even if some random millionair bought an Alienware people would still make fun of him.
That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
So you're telling me that you make fun of everyone who doesn't go to Walmart or the Dollar Store?
Must suck to be you, dude. Making fun of how people live their lives rather than living it just like how they live theirs.

Hey Flipman. How'd your laptop turn out?
I've always had a softspot for Acer. - May 31, 2012 6:38 pm GMTFlipManV3 posted...

The G53 is totally awesome for it's price and that was what I was choosing between my AW before I made the purchase.
Only size killed it for me because I am lugging this in my backpack everyday. But the G53's cooling system looks beast. Heard they run silent too.

Awesomeness Redefined - May 31, 2012 6:51 pm GMTAs long as you purchase Alienware from a 3rd part you won't pay the extra. I got an Alienware because there was literally no price difference between that and the other brands on the website I purchased from. Ever since Alienware was purchased by dell they went south. You used to actually get high end hardware but now it's all cheap generics. Don't buy from dell but just because someone has an Alienware doesn't mean they overpaid.

Sometimes Dell does "specials" and when they do the price is actually pretty good. They like to do this in the form of coupons. I waited for one before I bought mine. If you go to notebook specific forums that's what they advise people to do.
Another thing is refurbs. I actually prefer them more to fresh out of assembly ones because they have gone through the quality check twice. I have a friend who is an ex-Dell employee, and he personally admits that buying refurbs could potentially be more hassle free than new ones.

Hey Flipman. How'd your laptop turn out?
I've always had a softspot for Acer.
Hey, what's up, pretty good so far. I can't run it at full settings, but it can run at 30-35(with some dipping to 20s) at a little greater than medium settings so I'm pretty happy at just having it at full resolution.
Minor complaints, no Bluetooth, backlight keyboard, extra buttons, hinge aren't as tight as Dell's, atrocious battery, etc. But it was $550 so I'm good. Too bad they sold out since you were looking for one, but I'm sure back to schools sales will be even better if you hadn't gotten one yet.

How do you know it was five times the price?
He was getting bashed before he even quoted the specs OR the price.
And no, there's no place that will charge you five times the original price of an expensive-ish product, hardly less than twice, at most.
I don't think that the TC was bragging at all, either. He's just excited. If he was bragging, he would've most likely posted specs.
If you reread the topic, it seriously seems like people are jealous and bashing for no reason other than the name Alienware. It's like bashing people for eating at Olive Garden or something. I'm on the same side as you, if someone went up to me and said he paid $700 for his 40" LG HDTV and how much better it is than Toshiba(with similar specs) or something, I'd probably laugh too.

I will come to the GameFAQs and flaunt it, as I play D3 on my BMW of a laptop while you are only using the Honda Civic. I will then post and let you all troll on me as you wish.

I was so disappointed when that happened. But I'm glad you like it so far.
That's about what I expected. I'm certain I can squeeze out more FPS than that by turning off things I don't care for. - May 31, 2012 8:06 pm GMTFrom: ford0 | #072

I think you are a little confused. I'll try and clear things up for you.
Buying an Alienware would be like playing D3 on a BMW. The rest of us will be playing D3 on a BMW. The difference? We didn't pay 5 times as much for our BMW. Hope that helps.
I personally couldn't care less if you paid 25K for your computer with the same exact specs as mine that I only paid 1k for. I will however laugh my ass off.

That's kind of sad actually... I avoid going to Walmart for anything just because of the trashy people that shops there. I'd rather pay a bit more for my groceries than have to see or hear the trashy people that shop and work there.

I support the TC too. I made a crap load of money off people like that back in the military. People fresh out of boot camp with a crap load money from their bonus ready to buy the best computer. So I would build them one for a couple grand. Of course it only cost me 1k to build it. So I understand why Alienware does it. There are a lot of stupid people out there. Well, I guess they call them suckers.
It's not being stupid, it's just providing a service, which is the basis for most every business. Not everyone places a prioritization on building and putting everything they own together in order to save money on everything. Sometimes people just want to go with the fast, convenient route, like deciding to eat out instead of cook a good meal on your own.
