I had planned on buying this game until I played the Path of Exile beta. I never played Diablo 2, but played the original diablo on playstation and loved it back in the day. I also played Wow for a good 3~4 years starting at release so I imagine I would be into this game. My dilemma is, Path of Exile scratched all my dungeon crawling itches in the one weekend I got to try it. Plus it is free. I am just really questioning my purchase of this game. It would help if I had D3 beta, but since I don't I am here.
So, anyone who has played both Path of Exile and Diablo 3 mind giving my some insight on their opinion? Pros Cons? Thanks.

It seems you still do not understand, about the end of Earth...
Wait till they release and watch some Lets Plays, video reviews, don't pre-order a thing, you're less likely to be sorry with your purchase.
I know people who played Diablo I alot, they all tell me they didn't like some things in D2 and they really don't like how d3 seems to be turning out.

Path of Exile is what is closest to Diablo 1, which is the best game in the series IMHO, the art style, the Cathedral Dungeons, the npc's that live in the town, etc. It was a revolutionary game.
Most people nowadays just remember Diablo 2 because they were kids when they played it, most older brothers, uncles, played like me, Diablo 1, and also 2, but 2 was kind of "not as dark as 1", hell, even the locations are like "going around the world because we want to show we can produce a game with all the environments the earth has".
Diablo 2 was good, don't get me wrong.
Diablo 1 was something else not even remotely present in 99.99% in games of today.
I bought it in 1997, I was 15 y/o, and the gameplay in Diablo 3 today is almost the same as that game.
"Almost", but not quite, I don't know if in Path of Exile they have a Diablo 1 developer, but its amazing how it feels like that game with upgraded elements and new stuff thrown in.
As with previous released games, Diablo 3 will be a hit, but make no mistake, that's nothing like the original Diablo, a game that not even it's sequel can match, much less this "online all the time" spawn they created.

No comparison IMO

There appeared to be a lot of developers with dark ideas in the 90s. As people get older they change and often let go of their old ideas. A good example would be George Lucas with his new star wars series. I feel the first three had more of the ideas of a young man which is what he was when he made them. The other three were more the ideas of an older man who has a broader view of the world and sees things more grey instead of black and white. At any rate Path of the Exile looks good, but I haven't tried it. Diablo 3 didn't seem to dark to me in beta, but it was still fun to play. It's hard to expect the same game when this one is being made around 10 years in the future by different people. Even if it was made by the same people that doesn't mean it would have the same tone or ideas.

Diablo 3 will have very high production values which is typical of Blizzard, so it will probably be worth the money just to play through the game at least once. But it's upto you of course, no one can tell you from playing POE beta or D3 beta if you should buy the game or not, make your own mind up.

Speaking of production values, what's with the lame animations?
Hold down attack with the monk for example and the strikes have no transition into each other . I haven't seen anything quite like that from a 'quality' title since, well I can't remember :o- Please wait. Quick reply will be available shortly.

POE has more character development by far, and allows for more versitility.
D3 has far superior combat and animations.
Overall both decent games, POE needs to brush up its combat mechanics quite a bit imo.

It's quite simple: If you want Diablo 1 on steroids, play PoE. It's dark, ugly (kinda fits the game, though), gritty, unforgiving and complex.
If you want a modern, more polished version of Diablo 2 (with alittle of WoW in it), then play D3.

Bring on the "oblivion with guns", "metal horses" and "slingshot nukes", this fan is ready for them all.
I played both betas.
POE has a lot of new mechanics, but keep in mind that diablo 3 is the nephew of the game that invented the genre.
I got bored by POE after 15 hours of gameplay, looked a little too complex for an old fart like me (I'm 30) so I'll go back to the game I;ve been waiting for the last 4 years.

I have played and like both games, but for me D3 destroys PoE. I will most likely play PoE because its good, but how could they honestly compete with Blizz. D3 is fast paced, and just fun as hell. All we have got to play is the beta and their is so much more on the way. D3 has a great art style, and I beg to differ that it is like WoW. It is very styleistic and moody, and its gory. Play PoE when u can it will be free, and probly wont be done for awhile. I would buy D3 and play with other people its just pure fun, and done listen to the obvious haters around any D3 boards.

Having played both betas extensively, despite the limited scope of area open in D3, I'd say D3 is my cup of tea over PoE. First of all in PoE I fear it falls into what ills many games these days, unbalanced min-max skill trees. I fear you'll have FotM builds every patch as the developers keep nerfing/buffing things.
PoE graphics are dark and lifeless, not to say it's not the same in D3 but we've yet to see most of the game. PoE beta has the entire game and running through just the first 3 difficulties was a chore to me to suffer through the blah.
That excitement moment of finding rare gear seems ever present in Diablo 3. In PoE, you can get a lot of rare drops but they didn't really appeal to me simply because you are always looking for very specific traits or slots, and that really detracts from the excitement of getting a drop. In the end you are just farming for orbs so that you can hope to generate something that you can replace that awesome common magic drop.
Don't get me wrong, I almost feel they are 2 completely different games, and are both worth playing. PoE is free anyway so give it a try. Again this is just my own independent opinion. I love the revival of this genre with so many action RPGs coming out this summer.

- May 3, 2012 2:59 am GMTDiablo is like your first love. Nothing will ever match that. You will always have fond memories about it. My problem with most action rpgs or Diablo clones is this. They never make me want to come back for more the way Diablo does. Even through the beta, even though you could reach only level 13 and you had one area to play through, I kept playing the same damn thing over and over and over again and I wasnt bored. That is something I cant say about PoE. Yes, it reminds me of the old days of Diablo 15 years back, yes it is more complex, but Diablo had such a huge success because it was simple. Diablo III follows that recipe because an action RPG should remain simple yet action pact. Graphics, cost and online DRM or not, does not make a game great. A game is great when you are through you 23rd playthrough and you still cant get enough. Well for me Diablo III gives me that vibe and I havent felt it in a long time.

It's not about changing the world. It's about doing our best to leave the world the way it is. It's about respecting the will of others and believing in your own... Isn't that... what... you fought for? -Big Boss
After playing PoE till lvl 57, and completing merciless i can say that PoE is pretty much a horrible game. I find it funny how people say that PoE is harder than Diablo 3, while even merciless (the hardest difficulty.) in PoE is a cakewalk, and i bet that inferno will be really difficult.
There will only be 3 acts, and that is also very disappointing. Item varienty is very low and there are only like 60 uniques in total, unlike in D3, where there is hundreds of uniques and legendary items.
You can't even call the hardcore really "hardcore" since if you (ever) die you'll be booted into the default anyway and can continue playing the game.
If you dont believe me, check out hardcore ladder and PromisedPain, my character is actually named "Naistenmies." Btw, i never came close to dying, this game is even easier than D2, at least D2 had some challenging parts.

PoE uses outdated and flawed game mechanics. The reason Blizzard got rid of the skill trees is because they offer the illusion of choice but are, in fact, very restrictive. Think about it: once you pick a branch and spend your first skill point, you're pretty much locked into that branch until you retire the character. Diablo 3 offers the player so much more variety and litterally billions of viable build options per class. If character customization is your thing then Diablo 3 will give you the best gaming experience. If you enjoy old school skill trees and other outdated concepts then PoE is for you.

There are gameplay reasons for that. Look at, for example, Titan Quest and note how slow and lethargic the combat feels. That's because you're forced to watch the entire animation for every attack -- for instance, if you're swinging a sword and then threw a fireball, your character will first finish his attack animation and then go into the fireball animation -- which slows down the pace of the game and makes combat feel more methodical and less frenetic. Diablo 3, on the other hand, allows animations to be interrupted which lends it an extremely tight and responsponsive feel. And honestly, when you're in the midst of a dozen baddies with a pack of rares nipping at your heels, you're far too busy slaying demons to even have time to notice the interruptions in the attack animations.
That said, skill animations will continue to be a work in progress following release. See the following post from Blizzard rep Bashiok:
"We?re certainly aware of how we?re handling our skill animation sets, as well as your feedback regarding the monk specifically. While working on any piece of the game we have to make production calls on what has the biggest benefit for the time we?re spending on it, because time is quite simply a very precious commodity. We made some choices, some that you may not agree with, to ensure a solid level of animations throughout the game. To make a call on not displaying a weapon during a skill may allow us to animate a multitude of spell casts for a demon, a higher priority animation for another character, or unique animation to ensure an in-game cutscene feels epic. Making the tough calls on when and where the game and players as a whole will benefit most is one of the most difficult things the producers, designers and artists have to do.
"It?s worth noting that in addition to making those tough calls we take a logical approach to skill animations, and there are some where we purposely do not show a weapon. This is mostly for summoning or buff abilities where a weapon doesn?t play into the skill, such as mantras, or Inner Sanctuary. There are other skills where we purposely do not show a weapon because the concept of the skill is not connected to a weapon, such as Seven-Sided Strike and Lashing Tail Kick. In addition there are skills that purposely do not show a weapon because the skill is conceptually about the monk using his fists or hands, such as Way of the Hundred Fists or Exploding Palm.
"There are skills though that don?t fall into any of those, and just should have been showing weapons. When you gave us that feedback we absolutely heard your requests for additional animations, and we added a full animation suite to the three skills where we felt the impact would be the greatest; Dashing Strike, Crippling Wave, and Deadly Reach. For us that was not only a great use of our resources to get it done, but we thought it was a very visible way to relate to you that we?ve been listening.
"So, all of that background and info said, we still have plans to make even more changes and improvements in patches released fairly shortly after release. In a patch we plan to change Exploding Palm, Way of the Hundred Fists, and Fists of Thunder so they don?t hide fist weapons. Since the idea is that these skills are about the monk using their fists, it just makes sense to allow fist weapons to continue to show. In addition, as we continued to refine the monk class and our design philosophies for itemization, our ideas about what weapons make sense for the monk have changed over time. To see that philosophy shift through we?re looking at simply giving monks the ability to wield more types of weapons, complete with full animation support for their skills.
"Hopefully that explains some of our intent with skill animations, and not just with the monk, all of the same thought and care (if not more) has gone into crafting the animations for each class and their skills. We're of course looking forward to getting the game into your hands in a couple weeks, and seeing how everyone enjoys the class they choose, and the skills they wield."http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/4253973263?page=16#314

[/QUOTE] I'm not sure if you're serious or not, but it's meant to be that way. It's because the monk is hitting so fast you can barely see his hands move.
