Fast flashy action but overtly repetitive.

User Rating: 5.5 | Devil May Cry (Platinum) PS2
I recently began this game, having never played any of the Devil May Cry's. Thought I'd start with the original. I haven't finished the game yet. I'm currently on mission 17.

So far it's an okay game, not impressive enough for a 9 or 10 rating, but just enough fun is eked out to manage to be right in the middle at a 5 or 6 rating.

I gotta say I find this game terribly over-rated.

There is some intense action sequences, nail biting suspense in areas and, head bashing difficulty, some of the games highlights. Also I like the stylish Gothic theme that runs through the game.

Missions are rather short but loaded with plenty of battles to test you.

There are an assortment of weapons to find, and various moves to unlock and master.

There are too many features that ultimately bog down the gameplay. The cameras in each room is fixed but will suddenly change to a new fixed camera angle, and I do think the games difficulty relies too heavily on this. Most enemies are difficult until a pattern of moves is established. Bosses are tedious fights with the camera being usually your biggest threat.

Games control is alright but not very good, jumping (again because of camera problems) is a chore that is unnecessarily tedious.

Graphics are not bad, music stands out until it gets repetitive, action is fast and furious. But in my opinion camera and reliance on too much repetition seriously hurt the gameplay. A fun game turned just okay but not great.

Will continue to play, attempt to finish the game, and I'll try part 2, perhaps the other games in the series improve.
