Destiny is back, new and improved

User Rating: 8 | Destiny 2 PS4

Destiny 1 was undoubtedly a huge release, and while fun, it did have certain flaws. Three years later we now have Destiny 2, which has fixed a many of those issues in what I believe is a much more enjoyable game.

Story: 7/10

Destiny 1’s story was a convoluted mess that honestly didn’t make any sense. This time around there is an actual story which flows well throughout the short campaign missions. We have not only an identifiable villain, but also a purpose as the guardians struggle to take back their home city after it is attacked and left in much destruction. While the story is pretty straightforward with nothing very deep, it is still entertaining enough that you will see it through to the end.

Score: 8/10

Music here is a good step up. Many times I found myself saying “wow, this song is cool” while I was playing. But I think some of that music could have been better suited for things like boss fights, rather than times when I was simply walking through a cave or openly exploring.

Characters/Character Development: 7/10

The main characters here are Zavala, Cayde-6, Ikora and Hawthorne, a woman who lives outside the walls who ultimately helps fight for your cause. Cayde-6 is quite lovable and funny (voiced by Nathan Fillion) and definitely the most redeeming character. When other characters try to be funny, it just feels unnatural.

Graphics: 9.5/10

Graphics look amazing but nothing will be blowing you away. Still no complaints here, everything looks smooth.

Gameplay: 9/10

For a shooter this game definitely lets you play your way. Tons of different types of guns let you control your own playstyle. Destiny 2’s weapon and armor are also very customizable in terms of looks so you can have your guardian looking any way you would like them to.

Difficulty: 5/10 (0 being the easiest, 10 being the hardest)

While this game has some challenging moments, it can be easily overcome with the additions of friends. Even in a restricted respawn zone, allies can revive you if they can reach the spot you fell, making the fact that you died pretty much obsolete. Still even with this many of the bosses in the raid and nightfall provide a good challenge that take some time to work through.

Fun: 8.5/10

The improvements of Destiny 2 definitely shine forward and bring out the fun. Getting new engrams to unlock new weapons and armor comes often enough so that you feel rewarded and exciting when you get one without making it feel like something you finally get after playing for too long. PVP matches also test skill and with weapon levels disabled, it gives you a fair test of how good you are, no matter how long you’ve played.
