Go ahead and hate me if you want, but...

User Rating: 7.5 | Demon's Souls PS3
I'm not impressed. Not with something that won Game of The Year in 2009, with the competition it was facing. Demon's Souls is very, very hard, horribly unforgiving and super hardcore. I'm ok with that. That's what I was expecting. But the RPG elements are as shallow as a kiddy pool, the controls (especially clicking R3 everytime you want to target something) are dreadful, and the whole game smacks of great ambition and poor execution.

The enemy AI is pathetic, just unbelievable that you could release something so broken and people wouldn't flame this game for having such broken, glitchy AI. The ragdoll physics of the dead is laughable, literally you will laugh... at first, then its just painful to look at. The level design is as linear as you can possibly be. The idea of writing notes is great in principle, but in practice its a constant reminder that you're playing a game. The game makes NO effort whatsoever to explain to you how the more complicated things work, so if having to look stuff up online is "hardcore", count me out. The dialogue is so well recorded that the NPC's don't even have to open their mouths while they talk.

If you can't tell by now I'm a little irked at Gamespot and the community at large for pouring so much affection onto this lackluster title. This is "Too Human" for the Ps3, except it has horrible controls and less going on... and yet Gamespot flames "Too Human" as being a horrible unplayable mess, and gives this... THIS game of the year. How? Why? Who? Where? Really?

I don't mind dying over and over again, but I don't even have any concept of what I'm trying to do. Collect souls. Why? Shut up, go collect more souls. Go ahead and give this review a thumbs down, I've been around here long enough to know that if you speak ill of a game, it gets the thumbs down. Thats fine. But if I can stop one person from wasting their xmas money on this horribly overrated blandfest, it's worth the flack.

P.S.

Upon review I've realized that I haven't said anything GOOD about the game, and yet I've given it a 7.5, ... That's not really fair on my part. I consider 7.5 to be a game worth playing, not for $60, but still, I'd like to say a couple quick things in favor of this game. As has been stated (overstated perhaps?) the environments are quite a bit of fun. The graphics aren't 10/10 but they certainly have their own look and it works. Combat is satisfying, most of the time. The soundtrack is also a touch above the norm.
