Game Emblems

The Good

The Bad

  1. Thank god for the free demo weekend on Steam

  2. Many Issues, Support not very helpful, long waits on tickets, Challenging but risky if mission will complete properly

Defiance is the B movie of massively multiplayer games: rickety and unrefined, yet a good time all the same.

The Good

  • Exciting arkfalls capture the sense of a population fighting for riches
  • The lure of interesting new weapons is irresistible
  • Well-paced co-op missions
  • Great scaling and progression have you exploring the world early on.

The Bad

  • Depressing array of bugs intrude on almost every aspect of play
  • The shooting lacks a sense of power
  • Wonderless world and story
  • Unbalanced difficulty in story missions.

Defiance is a difficult game to wrap your head around. That's not because it's all that complicated, but rather because it's just so much fun, even though none of the elements are done particularly well. Defiance is a massively multiplayer shooter in which every aspect is merely decent at best, yet it somehow pieces the jagged elements together into an entertaining picture as you pursue one challenge after another across its postapocalyptic landscape. What a shame that the trek is interrupted not just by the squishy kinds of bugs that you like to kill with guns and grenades, but the technical kinds of bugs that have you cursing and rolling your eyes.

Some people come together for the sake of love. Others come together for the sake of shooting hulking mutants.

Look beyond the hitches and the glitches, and you discover a game with a scrappy attitude and a tight handle on what a massively multiplayer world needs to keep you coming back in spite of the frustrations. What is this world? Well, it's Earth, as it happens--more specifically, the San Francisco Bay Area. An alien war has ended, and an uncertain peace between exhausted factions remains. The decrepit remnants of an annihilated fleet of spaceships orbit the planet, occasionally plummeting to the land beneath, and drawing in treasure hunters eager to scour the remaining debris for valuable commodities. Terrestrial and extraterrestrial plant life have merged, causing bizarre purple flowers to grow from the gnarled branches that corkscrew above crumbling highways and rusting copied-and-pasted factories.

You shouldn't come to Defiance to be immersed in the world, which looks too monotone to be all that compelling. Ruinous environments can have their own kind of disastrous beauty, but this vision of Earth lacks the tense atmosphere and visual variety of gaming's best ravaged lands. You might become invested in this world in spite of its mundane looks, however, depending on your level of interest in the SyFy television show of the same name. Story-based missions feature the vague likenesses of characters from the show, and future story missions are promised, but stiff facial animations and inconsistent voice acting--not to mention a lot of cheesy (in the bad way) dialogue--make it hard to whip up any excitement over the narrative in spite of an abundance of cutscenes.

Massively multiplayer online games have trod in alien territory before, though while sci-fi games like Tabula Rasa and Anarchy Online involved guns, they weren't shooters. And unlike PlanetSide and its sequel, which focused purely on player-versus-player combat, Defiance embraces many elements of traditional online role-playing games. You move from mission to mission, clearing meadows of giant hellbug swarms, freeing captured prisoners from their bonds, collecting data from computer terminals, and the like. You perform most of these tasks in the open world, though key missions might send you into instanced areas. If you've played any MMOG before, you'll be familiar with the basic structure.

How you interact with your enemies in Defiance, however, is different from in a typical online RPG. This is a shooter, so you can ignore what other games have taught you about ability hotbars, and concentrate on aiming at your target and pulling the trigger. That isn't to say you don't have special skills to mess with or that there is no character progression. You initially choose one of four powers so that you can run really fast, go invisible, create a ghostly decoy, or enhance weapon damage. From there, the power grid expands, allowing you to earn and improve lots of passive perks, though you can equip only as many perks as your loadout allows, and eventually you can unlock the other powers to play around with.

These skills are called EGO powers, named after the Environmental Guardian Online artificial intelligence fused with your body. This AI is Defiance's version of Halo's Cortana, though EGO makes a far more annoying companion than Cortana, what with the sharp treble of her voice and the repetitious line readings that don't necessarily make sense in every context. (Do hellbugs really call in reinforcements, as if they have tiny radios strapped to their heads?) But you'll be glad of the abilities she grants you, which aren't very thrilling to activate or watch, but are nonetheless useful in battle. Need to shake off a flame-spewing munchkin? Distract him with your decoy, and shoot the fuel supply strapped to his back. In over your head? Turn invisible and make a quick getaway.

It isn't the powers that make for rewarding progression in Defiance, however; it's the weapons. There is a cornucopia of choices, and once you get a taste of each gun type, you'll be pleased that your inventory is constantly filling with so many deadly possibilities. Simple pistols and machine guns are soon upgraded with modifications you purchase and earn, or are replaced with similar weapons infused with effects like fire and poison. Launchers come in all sorts of varieties. You might be able to lock on to your target, or perhaps your payload explodes in midair and spews fire onto your enemies beneath. Infectors cause bugs to spawn within your victims and eat away at their flesh; biomagnetic guns allow you to siphon health from foes and grant it to friends.

And so your drive to continue playing is fueled by the ever-present possibility of a new gun, a new variant, or a modification that enhances the bond to your current weapon of choice. That bond is then broken when a shiny new toy makes the old, newly obsolete weapon a relic of the past, though weapons remain surprisingly effective for some time. In fact, the gap in weapon effectiveness that you usually feel in a persistent-world game as you level up isn't so pronounced in Defiance, due in part to how well enemies scale based on how many players are in the vicinity.

The gentle progression curve allows developer Trion Worlds to take you on a tour of its world without dividing it into territories that cater to players of specific levels. Reaching one end of the county doesn't mean having to fight your way to some arbitrary level limit, which makes Defiance feel more freeing than other online worlds, even though it doesn't cover the exhaustive amounts of real estate other games do. That isn't to say that Defiance doesn't feel appropriately large, or doesn't give you a lot to do; the world map is dotted with orange waypoints that lure you to vehicular speed challenges and side missions, and white waypoints that indicate vendors promising special guns for sale.

Heard about this game a long time ago.  The show is pretty cool.  Has it's moments.  But still like anyone, I was wary of paying $60 bucks for the game and not knowing if I'd like it.  Not a big MMORPG game fan.

Free steam weekend comes around and so of course I try it with an option to buy for $41.99 or $18 off.

Played heavily during the weekend and found myself simply having fun with this game.  Gunplay is good.  Tons of guns.  The best way to think of the guns is that they are similar to Borderlands style.  But you can also add attachments that make them better.  You need a special currency, but one that you get from playing or breaking down some of the weapons you pick up.

Missions are like you expect from any open world or MMORPG type.  Fetch this, infiltrate compound and kill/acquire something, rescue someone, etc.  Arkfalls are quite intense and fun.  The pvp is ok, but it gives you a different kind of currency to purchase other items.  I think there are 3 or 4 different types.

You can also purchase xp and other boosts including a few I think can affect others as well. Like a team or clan boost or something (though I'm not 100 percent sure as I'm not in a clan, nor purchased any).   You can also buy more inventory slots, skins, etc.  But you also get more inventory slots as you go.  If memory serves correct you start with 10 and I'm currently at 28 now after a couple of days of playing.   So I don't think it's pay 2 win, and since it's mostly not pvp, the effects of others using them doesn't really affect you negatively.

Graphics aren't very good, but online MMORPG's usually aren't.  But they are a notch below their peers.  That said the world is interesting and there is some decent animation at times along with some nicely built structures and things in the environment.

Not a lot of fast travel locations, but there are some, so when you aren't using them you summon your vehicle which appears magically nearby.  Summon, hop on and go.  This really makes things much quicker and easier.

360 controller works good.  Summon the vehicle with the up d-pad.  Other directions get you into pvp matches and as you wait for other players you continue romping around the normal world until the match begins and then you just go to the area.  It sure beats waiting in a lobby.

There are bugs, but I didn't seem to run into many of the ones the reviewer experienced.  So the patches seemed to have fixed quite a few of them.

There's supposed to be more free and pay content ahead.

Overall it's a poor man's Borderlands/Fallout-esque meets MMORPG with console graphics but at PC resolution.

No doubt the game is linked to the success of the show.  The better the show does, one would think the more people should play the game.  The longer it survives, the longer the game survives.

So from the Hollywood reporter..."Currently in the middle of its initial order, Defiance marked the second largest series premiere in network history and has regularly won cable?s scripted offerings in its Monday time slot among adults 18-49. It opened on April 15 to 2.7 million viewers and 1.3 million in the demo."

It also has already been renewed for a 2nd season.  This bodes well for the game.  Technically it's possible for either to fail while the other succeeds, but imo it looks like this game should survive until at least the end of next season, so the renewal has lessened the chance of a quick plug pull on the game.

I found it quite fun and kept wanting to come back for more.  Waited until the end of the free weekend and made the purchase.  No regrets.

Perhaps it gets another free weekend in a few months, or perhaps a month or so from now when the Steam Summer sale happens it might go on another discount.  I recommend you consider it then, and now that I played even at full price this game would be worth it to me.

This editor is an idiot, and here is why: It has nothing to do with not supporting a game that has its heart set on bringing different kinds of people together. It's this. If the game is truly fun, then how does it get a mediocre review? I've played boring games with good graphics and few bugs that got better reivews than this. We the People need to find a way to get all these editors fired and replaced by competant individuals.

The sole criteria for rating a game should be "How fun is this game?"

@EthnicKonflict

Fun is subjective. I for one would give this shit stain a 4, simply because the gameplay mechanics ruin the fun for me.

EthnicKonflict
EthnicKonflict

@Lost-to-Apathy @EthnicKonflict

Fun *is* subjective!

Biocentrists would argue that all existence is an interaction between subjectivity and the natural world, where subjectivity in fact creates the universe.

If no awareness exists, then the objective universe is logically ambiguous with non-existence.

Daemoroth
Daemoroth like.author.displayName like.author.displayName 2 Like

@EthnicKonflict I'd rather have an accurate rating that takes gameplay/immersion/bugs/etc into account, with a clear statement (As he did mention) that it is fun, but warns you of the pitfalls and stuff you may have to deal with, than a rose-tinted "game is fun!! auto-8!!! :D" rating that will make review scores even MORE useless than they already are.

Different things are important to different people, ignoring everything else because one aspect is ultimately important to you is pointless. Even your statement "How fun is this game" is subjective - gameplay, immersion and bugs are important to me, and all contribute to how much fun I'm having with a game. If only one in three excel (Great gameplay, for example), I'll have fun for a day and then I'll get bored.

Maybe if devs wanted us to "give a game a chance" they should bring back demos instead of clever "touched up" gameplay videos and paying off sites for great scores.

strongrthanall7
strongrthanall7

@Daemoroth @EthnicKonflict We all know that if a game starts out inherently "fun",which you said perfectly,"fun" IS objective, but if it starts to bug out and keeps doing it, like DEFIANCE on a big scale, then it's tough. I have had complete giant battles that have I have barely won ony to have them just start up again like I never did anything at all, as well as had weapons I purchased with loot, just dissappear right out of my arsenal, as well as a few other things. Gears(first one) had bugs too, remember when you could walk below the ground and look up at the rest of the players? but they fixed it and that wasnt enough to piss you off. The deiance bug had me throw the control and yell"GTFO here" and shut my PS3 off. I don't personally enjoy double work, or shoddy workmanship. And i've read tons more bug situations with it. I got it first day and the ps3 chat is the whackest thing ever for it. Nightmare actually.

EthnicKonflict
EthnicKonflict

@Daemoroth @EthnicKonflict

That's certainly a fair response, and after all, this is a fair review. But in my opinion, the response of the audience to the game, specifically how fun the audience believes the game to be, far outweighs the importance of bugs.

In addition, I believe that there are more important things than an "accurate" opinion piece on a game. For example, you have pointed out that GameSpot is paid to give good reviews. While this is probably rarely if at all directly the case, the conflicting interest between the game development community, including reviewers, and the public certainly introduces bias.

I think a good message is more important than a fair opinion, and the message of shows like Star Trek, Babylon 5, and now Defiance is always a goodie.

EthnicKonflict
EthnicKonflict

@OldKye

Finally, I am conflicted because I also do not trust the bulk of humanity to understand which idea is in our own best interests. Nothing in all of human interaction is more obvious.

What do you do when you want neither possiblility? Do not play the game (metaphorically :) It would be best if only facts were presented in a review and interpretation ignored. However, these reviewing sites play hard ball.

I chose this site because it seemed least likely to censor me (think about how that relates to imposing opinion for just a second.) In fact, I would be upset if the editor were fired. However, it is a good attention grabbing device. And it appears to have worked, after all! Ironically, this is helping me to impose my opinion on you haha! You are pissed, and so you read.

EthnicKonflict
EthnicKonflict

@OldKye

You are correct in that I am not a fan of the egotistical reviewing idea. It annoys me. You are also correct in that ALL reviews are an attempt to "impose your or anyone else opinion". What does it mean to "impose" an opinion? Consider how that might even be possible to do on a free and critical mind.

Why, for instance, does what one reviewer thinks make more difference than the audience at large, my own opinion or this reviewer's? And yet, such a review actually has the power to control the opinion of the audience.

OldKye
OldKye like.author.displayName 1 Like

@EthnicKonflict Your problem is it's his opinion, if his opinion was that the sky is green not blue it would be accurately, fair, and honestly his opinion....

Meaning imposing your or anyone else opinion of the game means your reviewing not him I've read 40 reviews on this game everyone really likes something and hates the rest "story's great but it's not fun to play..." "story's awful but it's fun to shoot things..." "story and gameplay are awful but it's fun with others.."

In other words the feeling i get is no one agree's on anything about it except for the fact that they feel somethings missing 7.0 would mean it's a good game but not outstanding 6.5 seems a fair rating when compared to others "just something missing".

Personally going to wait for a whole bunch of patches and I'll probably playing it when your so sick of it your'll never touch the show or game again lol.

@UdderJuice Yeah, well, Xcom WAS buggy beyond repair when it came out, now it is close to the finished product that it should've been when it was released, yet I find my self play multiple playthroughs in the campaign and in multiplayer, similar experience I had with Alpha Protocol.  If you can overlook some bugs, some games are more then decent and actually playable.  At least better than most of the stuff out there atm.

i bought this and they sell as a MMORPG but it's just a sandbox with a couple dozen of people.it's b**** to instal and come with some sqa mistacle that should have been taking care in beta.the mission are made of a riducule amount of enemie and then you realise your gonna get 3 wave of it,soo much that it make carring ammo a issue and your force to go reload more offent that a beer drinker goes pissing.

with all this probleme and all this hassel + all the bug.... i came to the conclusion that it gonna be the last time i buy a trion product

most people in the croud think that defiance is gonna be a 100$millions flop and let just say that the video game shure did help in promoting this idea

It isn't a mmorpg it is just an mmo that is also a tps. Also every mmo has issues when they first come out, some have more then what Defiance had or still has. Those issue no matter what mmo it is can sometimes take months or years to fix. From you post it sounds like you haven't even played Defiance, because you sound just like all the people who have nothing better to do than to complain about a game that you really haven't played. I have played Defiance since it was released, and it is a really fun and addicting game to play.

review pretty much nailed it. game is fun, has potential, but is buggy wiith a crappy UI.

It plays like a combination of Borderlands, Firefall and Red Faction Guerilla.

I'd buy it if it was $29.99 for me its not worth 60 bucks. Dont really understand how the show ties in but I watched it. Its got the same review. Watchable, has potential, but lacking in some areas.

@oflow I agree it's Ui is rather overly complex which in the future why is things more difficult and not easier I mean really? Buggy I played since april 11th and have seen little in way of bugs not they are not there not just many that made me say aw man this is bad (I play pve not pvp thus far but heard of the game crashing for such) What I hate is it being compared to games that are exclusively PC and not on any console. I mean any game would run well on a tricked out PC I mean duh. this game was MADE for console. FF14 is one of few MMOs for the console and while the game design is good people hate to play it and this game did it backwards. it's buggy but the gaemplay is great.

Daemoroth
Daemoroth

@IrishCatGod @Dumper1 @ragnar320 I appreciate him not reviewing on promises. If all reviewers did the same publishers will get off their ass and let devs FINISH a game before they actually release it.

This game is $60, without a trial, if it got an 8 because "one day it might be great" I'd be madder than a hippo with a hernia when I discover what a turd it is right now.

Sorry, but day-1 or week-1 patches SHOULD be day-0 patches, why do publishers think they can release half-finished games and we have to take what support they feel like providing.

PS - We also know that it's the rule in MMOs (But why is that? Why do they get to skate by on shitty launches and buggy crap?), so what's wrong with a launch-state review? We, as consumers, know it's an MMO, so if it gets a bad score because of bugs we know we can check back in 3 months.

I want reviews to be an accurate reflection of NOW.

@ragnar320 Even without bug the game is just bad this one deserve to be destroyed graphics looks from 10 years ago other MMO on console have done far better the shooting feels like a PS2 game. And by the way every outlet gived this game a bad review not just im it is bad you might have fun with it but the game was rushed out because of the show and should not even be out so no decent journalist will give it a good review graphics have not been polished PvP isnt balanced PVE isnt balanced sound effect are so bad a little kid could have done better no UI for PC we get a port of the UI for controller and i can continue all day it could have been good but its not and if you think all will be fix with patch you never played an MMO they will try to rush content because of the show and will put tons more bug every big patch just wait you will see.

@IrishCatGod @tektrader @ragnar320  At this point the product is unfinished and unpolished. You can't get away with selling something that is unfinished or should not have been released.
